Arius POV

It's almost been two years, and my family's attitude towards me has changed significantly. It's not like they're treating me like a son/brother, but more like a pet cat. Their attempts on "spoiling" me have just made everything worse.

It was a few weeks after my eighth birthday. My family, as usual, hadn't celebrated it with me, but I didn't mind it. The servants were kind enough to spoil me with small gifts, my favorite meals, and snacks, though. 'It was by far my most enjoyable birthday. It'll only get better next year.'

That morning, I was walking down the hallway to have breakfast, with Emily by my side, since big sis took the day off to visit her mother's grave.

Emily is the young maid who came to wake me up when the duke called for me, around a year ago. She's 18 years old and a really good company. Not to mention, I've gotten closer to the staff here, ever since I stopped pursuing my family.

Anyways, we're getting out of topic. We arrived at the dining hall, and what I saw there was a truly unique sight. There, at the head was the duke, eating silently along with the other two. Weird.

When they saw me coming in, they all paused, staring straight at me. 'Okay, did they smoke something last night?'
My face was blank and my eyes were cold. "Good morning."
After that, I wordlessly went to my seat and sat down. They were all still looking at me when I started eating. Usually, I couldn't care less, but it quickly got uncomfortable and I didn't feel like tolerating it. "Is there something you wish to discuss with me?" Needless to say, I was quickly getting annoyed.

The duke was the first one to speak: "Well, Arius. We're aware that we've never said it before, and I expect you to understand, since it's also your mother's death anniversary. With that being said,-"

"""Happy birthday.""" They all said simultaneously. I froze and started shaking with rage as I heard the servants gasp behind me. "See, I told you he'd be shocked, look at him shaking with joy." Lucia whispered over to Lucien, who just gave her a soft smile and a nod. "We sadly haven't bought you any gifts, since we had just realized yesterday that it'll be your birthday. We promise to make it up to you soon." Lucien's voice had always been annoying, but today it strangely made me want to strangle him.

"Today's my birthday?" I was clenching my fists hard under the table at this point. I could feel the servants' pitying gazes on me.
"Dumbass, what else?! Better be grateful that your family is going to give you lots of gifts!"
I couldn't bear to see them anymore, never had they made my blood boil THIS much. "There's no need for gifts."

"What do you mean, you brat. It's your birthday! Don't make us regret congratulating you, even though it's mother's death anniversary!" Lucia started to lose her cool again, making me slowly lose it too.

"Your sister is right. You're an Ambrose, it'd look bad if the youngest Ambrose didn't even receive a single gift for his birthday." Of course it was for the sake of Ambrose, what did I even expect? The duke couldn't care less about my birthday, but since their reputation has worsened in the last few months, this was a last resort.

My eyes went completely blank, although my death stares were still quite cold, this one in particular was the coldest one yet, and it seemed to greatly unsettle and confuse the silvernettes in front of me.

"I knew I never really meant much to you, but really? Today's the 3rd of April, not my birthday, it's not even close. My birthday is on February the 16th. I don't need any gifts on a random day." With that, I excused myself from the table and left the silent dining hall behind. The worst part is that they afterwards acted as if it never happened.

Needless to say, I'm as annoyed and angry at them as the day I got back my memories. That incident also happened to backfire at them drastically, no one wanted to respect a family that didn't even remember its youngest child's birthday.

'Anyways, no need to spoil my mood for tomorrow. Right, I forgot to mention it to you, apologies. Today's the 15th of February, tomorrow is my 9th birthday. This means that I'll finally get to meet my baby sister! I'm so excited!'

In the meantime, I've been working on my reputation as the prodigious and benevolent youngest son of the grand duke. I will be starting my mana training next week and my sword training next year.

Laying in my bed, I peacefully drifted off to sleep, dreaming of hugging my sister for the first time ever.
