WHEN VICTORIA ASKED THE GIRLS WHY THEY WERE GOING SHOPPING FOR DRESSES and to have manicures, all three replied in sync the same line: "It's your birthday.". But Victoria was smart enough to sense that her older sister and best friends were keeping something from her. It was the same feeling she had in the kitchen when Sophia urged her to be quicker.
However, Victoria enjoyed her day out with her girls. She bought herself a sleek black dress and a pair of new heels, matching the shoes to the dress. She had a manicure—the first she had since her wedding. Victoria had almost forgotten how wonderful it felt to have beautiful, neat gel nails.
The feeling she had and her suspicion deepened when they made a stop at Harper's to change their clothes and do their makeup. It was way too obvious now. It was clear they had something planned for her birthday, yet they continued to deny it. And Victoria played along.
"I'm sorry, Tori, but I have an order to follow," Harper said with a smile, holding a blindfold in her hand.
Victoria shook her head in disbelief, a small chuckle escaping her lips, but she allowed Harper to blindfold her. Though the birthday girl might have forgotten her birthday, the people around her hadn't. And it was evident they had something special in store for her twenty-first birthday.
Sophia and Harper guided blindfolded Victoria to Gabriella's car and helped her to get in. Once all four girls were seated in the car, her sister began to drive and all Victoria could do was run different scenarios in her head for this evening. The previous year, she had arranged her own birthday party. The year before, her family had surprised her with a two-week-long trip. And on her eighteenth, her friends had orchestrated a grand party. That one wasn't a surprise, yet she hadn't been planning it herself, but her friends consulted with her about some of the things.
Victoria has lost track of how long they were driving. Along the way, all four of them sang along with the radio and chatted about the most random things. The car finally slowed down, driving slowly for almost a minute before stopping. She heard faint whispers, but couldn't tell who was talking and what about. So, she sat patiently in the car, waiting for someone to help her.
The car doors swung open and Gabriella, Harper and Sophia got out of the vehicle. Silence. Victoria was in complete silence for a few minutes and she was beginning to wonder if she had been forgotten, but then the door on her side opened.
