WALL BE GONE

WHEN THE MOVIE ENDED, both of them stood up in silence, not saying a word to each other, still lost in their thoughts. Lorenzo gathered their trash and dirty dishes and headed to the kitchen, while Victoria turned off the TV and started to climb up the stairs. Their minds lingered more on last week's kiss than on the movie, but neither was ready to acknowledge it. Not yet.
Victoria used the moment alone to change into her sleepwear. She tossed the pillows onto the floor and draped the comforter over her vanity chair. Two weeks ago she used the black card Lorenzo gave to her and bought herself a vanity. It was elegant and modern, with a sleek white finish and a large, round mirror framed by soft, glowing lights. The drawers were spacious enough to hold her make-up, skin products and accessories, making it a perfect blend of style and functionality. Also, she matched it to the bedroom as if it was always there. It was not comfortable to do her make-up in the bathroom, so now she had a nice and comfortable spot for it. Besides, the vanity chair was a perfect place for the comforter. Victoria slid under the covers, the day's fatigue finally catching up with her.
Lorenzo finished putting dishes into the dishwasher and turned off the lights. He checked if the doors were locked and headed upstairs. Rubbing his tired eyes, entered the bedroom, expecting to find Victoria still awake since the light was on. Instead, he found her already asleep. What surprised him most was the absence of the pillow wall she always built between them. There was no wall tonight. Ever since they started living together, that barrier in the middle of the bed had been Victoria's nightly ritual. Did she was too tired to put the pillows between them? Did she forget? Or was it something else? He stood there for a moment, contemplating whether to rebuild it or leave it as it was. ' Fuck it ' he thought. He was also too tired to build that wall and decided to let it be, hoping it was a silent sign that things were beginning to change between them.
No, it did not mean that Lorenzo suddenly had romantic feelings for her. That was not the case at all. If Victoria's gesture was a sign that things were beginning to change between them, Lorenzo hoped it was a positive shift. They desperately needed to move from a state of mutual dislike to one of mutual tolerance. Yes, they had occasional conversations where they managed not to argue, but such moments were rare and needed to happen more frequently. If it did happen, it would make being around other people much easier. They would not need to maintain a facade of politeness, as their interactions would genuinely reflect a more harmonious relationship. This change would not only ease the tension between them but also create a more pleasant atmosphere for everyone around them. He was pretty sure their friends and families were tired of their bickering and the inability to get along.
Lorenzo slipped quietly into bed, careful not to disturb Victoria. He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, the events of the past week playing out in his mind. The kiss had been a turning point, a spark that neither of them had anticipated. It was different after that. A small shift in their dynamics, but not enough. He glanced over at Victoria, her breathing steady and peaceful. Something wanted him to reach out and close the gap between them, but he did not.
Victoria stirred slightly, shifting closer to him in her sleep. She was now there where the pillow wall was always built. The movement was small but significant and a subconscious gesture that made Lorenzo raise his eyebrow. He turned on his side, watching her for a moment before closing his eyes.

" Good morning, sleepyhead, " Victoria paused at the entrance to the kitchen when she saw Gabriella, Harper, Sophia and Eddie sitting at the kitchen island breakfast bar. She looked at her phone screen with confused eyes. 11:30 AM. Lorenzo was sitting next to Eddie, both of them giving all the attention to the stack of documents.
" What are you all doing here so early? " she murmured, heading to the coffee machine and expressing gratitude to Rosa for the plate of pancakes and syrup. Sundays were Victoria's favourite day of the week, as Rosa had established a tradition of making pancakes almost every Sunday morning.
" It's almost noon, " Sophia said, taking a sip of her coffee. Victoria murmured something under her nose and looked for a free barstool to sit on. She guessed it was her sister and friends' doing when the last vacant barstool was next to Lorenzo.
" Your point? It's Sunday, " Victoria stabbed her pancake and Lorenzo's hand brushed against hers when he put the documents back in the stack. She flinched slightly but no one noticed. Well, she hoped that no one noticed.
" We're going to have a fun day for girls. So, eat your pancakes, drink your coffee and go change, " Gabriella smiled at her.
" Also, it's your birthday. We need a fun day! " Harper exclaimed. Victoria furrowed her eyebrows and checked the date on her phone. Her eyes widened in surprise. It was her birthday. How could she have forgotten that today was her birthday? Especially since she was turning twenty-one.
" Did you forget about your birthday? " Gabriella asked her sister, slightly tilting her head to the side.
" I... Yes. But a lot was happening in my life past few months, it slipped my mind. "
" You've slept for half of the day. Chop chop, Tori. We have stuff to do, " Sophia urged her. Why she was urging her? It was Sunday and her birthday, but she forgot about it, so she did not organise anything for today. Unless... She scanned over everyone's faces but did not find anything that would tell her that something was going on today.
