“Where have you been? You stopped coming all of a sudden that I thought something happened to you”, he asked after a while whiles playing with my hair.
“Been busy with life”, I said trying to be vague about myself. I guess he realized I didn’t want to say so just let it be.
“It’s good you are alright”, he said and pecked my forehead. He pulled me into him and hugged me to sleep. I woke up when my phone rang and realized it was Haven calling me to check up on me. I checked the time and realized it was still dark outside and contemplated on whether to stay in his arms or leave since I didn’t know when else I was going to see him, but the anonymous rule in the club got me leaving his arms. I dressed, pecked his forehead and left him sleeping. Haven had a room for all her employees for their private dance sessions with their clients and each one had a spare key in case she wasn’t around and we needed to use it, so I felt relieved leaving him sleep in my room alone. I stood in front of the door trying to collect my thoughts and get myself out of the clouds before leaving the club completely. I went straight to bed after getting back home. I woke up later in the day feeling sore all over.
‘He didn’t go easy on me’, I thought and jumped into the tub to bathe but I found myself dozing off. I hurriedly washed down and fell on my bed trying to sleep only for my sleep to be interrupted by the doorbell.
“Who the hell is that”, I muttered and got up to check who was at the door.
“You, what are you doing here?”, I asked as she walked into my house like she always did.
“I brought food”, she said raising the bag in her hand.
“That’s why I love you”, I took the bag from her and walked to the kitchen to unpack the food.
“So how was your night, best friend?”, I heard from the hall.
“Nosy”, I reprimanded her.
“Hey, what are best friends for?’
“Not for snooping for juicy info of each other’s rendezvous, Haven”
“That intense? Well mine sure was boring, no hunk to get me off my high horse”, she said.
“Looking at you I’m sure you will be getting one soon”, I said coming from the kitchen with our food in hand.
“I hope he comes sooner, else I’m going to die of boredom’, she exaggerated earning an eye roll from me.
“Drama queen”
She stayed with me the whole day and decided to stay over instead of going home.
‘Ugh another week of hell’, I thought as I woke up the next morning and got ready for work. I did my morning routine and had breakfast leaving Haven’s breakfast in the fridge. I woke her and told her I was leaving which she responded with a hum.
“Good morning”, I greeted Amber when I passed by her to which she responded. After a week of meeting her we have already hit it off and I knew we were going to be good friends. I walked towards the familiar elevator and felt the anxiety coming back again. I thought a week of using the elevator was going to help but I was wrong. Getting off on the fifteenth floor I walked to his office and knocked on his door, entering after he called me in.
“Good morning sir”
“Good morning. How was your weekend?”, he asked smiling at me.
“Great, what about yours?”, I said smiling back at him.
“Take a guess”, he said grinning at me.
“That good?’
“Extraordinary”
Just as we finished talking Marcus entered and looked from Seth to me trying to guess why we both looked that happy on a Monday morning.
“Even though I don’t want to be a spoilsport we have to get back to work. Penny, your office is ready and you can go check it out to see if it is to your satisfaction. The best part is that it is connected to Seth’s office so you can get to him without having to walk a long distance”, he explained to me.
“Thank you”, I said I went to check the office. It was better than I thought and looked similar to Seth’s office just that it had a feminine touch to it. I sat in my chair and spun around taking in the whole office. I went back to tell them I loved the office which they were glad for. After a while the office phone rang freaking me out with how high it sounded.
“Hello, Ms. Whyte’s office. How may I help you?”, I said when I answered. It felt weird having to answer an office phone for the first time.
“I wanted to find out if the meeting tomorrow was still set”, the man at the other end asked.
“Yes please. The meeting is at 10 am at the sunset cafe”
“Thank you and see you tomorrow”
“Thank you and have a nice day”, I said and waited for him to hang up.
I called Seth’s office to remind him about the meet up but got no response from him so I went to his office to find his head on his desk. I decided to let him be seeing as he was asleep and he didn’t have any urgent meetings in his schedule for the day. I wrote the reminder on a note and stuck it on my laptop so I didn’t forget about it. I answered a few more calls and wrote down all those that were important for reminders later. When it was lunch I left the office to find his head still on his desk and decided to get our food thinking he would be awake by then. I left to get food for both of us and came back to the office to find him still asleep. I walked to his side to wake him up so he could eat only for him to clutch my hand tightly, causing me to stiffen. He was burning up and I got scared that it was going to get serious than it already was. I tried to pry his hand off so I could call Marcus but he stopped me and pulled me to him although weakly. I helped him get up and walk to the couch as best and as fast as I could, and boy was it tiresome because he was heavy and I had to support most of his weight. I helped him sit and tried to get him to eat but he couldn’t, seeing how weak he looked and felt, so I fed him but he only ate a little. I had called Marcus earlier to tell him about the fever when I was getting Seth’s food ready so just as he was done eating, I fed him the medicine and adjusted the couch so he could rest up. I cleaned him up his sweat when he was drenched and looked uncomfortable. When I realized he was okay, I heated up my lunch and ate making sure he was always comfortable.
“How did you get sick all of a sudden, you looked fine earlier”, I muttered looking at him. Just then his phone rang. I decided to put it on silence so he could rest without any disturbances but contemplated on answering it when I saw the ID on the screen “my world” but before I could answer it the phone stopped ringing. It started ringing again and answered it without much thinking.
“Hello”, I said when I answered the phone but her sudden interruption didn’t allow her to hear me.
“Seth, Seth where are you? Why didn’t you answer my call earlier? You didn’t call for your food. Are you starving yourself again for work? You know I don’t like it when you do that to yourself right”, she rambled on without letting me talk.
‘So he has someone already taking care of him. It would have been weird if he didn’t have anyone’, I thought feeling a pang in my chest.
“Hello, hello, are you there?”, she asked bringing me back to the present.
“Um hello, please this is Seth’s assistant”
“What do you mean by his assistant. Seth doesn’t have any assistant, and why would he? He finds them annoying. Are you one of those women trying to get into his bed?”, she asked sounding angry.
“No ma’am I’m serious, I really am his assistant. That aside Mr. Simmons isn’t feeling well and is resting. That’s why he couldn’t answer your call”, I said and sighed hanging up the call.
“Stupid, you could have done better”, I muttered looking at him. I left him and went back to my office to take care of my work. Once in a while I would go check up on him to make sure the fever had gone down. When I realized his fever had gone down, I went back to my office to rest. I woke up later to continue typing some documents and heard a commotion in Seth’s office. I checked the time to find out I had stayed beyond the closing time. I arranged my things and decided to leave when I heard the familiar voice.
“Where is she? The woman who claims to be his assistant?”, she said angrily. I decided to go out to clear the misunderstanding but I got a message from Marcus asking me to stay inside and not come out. I stayed for a while and left when I no longer heard any voice from his office. I went out of the building and hailed a taxi to go home.
