Monday came by faster than I had expected. I left for work earlier than I ever have and got coffee for Seth. I arranged all the contracts I got during the previous week and sent them to his desk sticking a note on the envelope for him. I stayed in my office for the rest of the day and called Amber later to get Seth’s lunch for him since I was busy. I heard someone enter his office and realized it was his lunch. I heard my phone ring and checked the ID to find out it was Seth and contemplated on whether to answer or not.
“Come to my office”, he said when I decided to answer. I went to his office to find him going through the contracts I placed on his desk.
“What is wrong, sir?”, I asked not looking at him.
“Won’t you go for lunch?”
“I’m still occupied with work so I can’t leave”
“It’s just lunch, it’s not as if you are leaving to go home”, he said sounding a little annoyed.
“I’m not hungry though so I can still stay and finish my work”
“Are you avoiding me?”, he said which caused me to raise my head to look at him but brought my head back down when I saw the look on his face.
“No sir, I’m just busy with arranging your schedule and typing some documents for the HR department’, I said fumbling with my hand.
“You”, he started and sighed. “Look at me”, he said instead.
I raised my head to look at him and started feeling hot all over remembering what happened over the weekend.
“I know that look. Don’t dwell on it okay. It was a mistake and I hope you treat it as such”, I heard which snapped me from my daydream. It stung a little but I had to agree with him to keep my job and to get myself out of my fantasy.
“Yeah you’re right. I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable. It won’t happen again and I’ll be professional from now on”, I said and left to my office when I realized there was nothing else to talk about. The rest of the day went by in a blur and before I knew it the day had ended, but before I left Seth told me about the meeting we had to attend the next day.
With the mind-set of having a meeting, I hurriedly took care of my business and left for the office but was still late since I met Seth and Marcus at the parking lot waiting for me. I apologized and sat in after them. Marcus sat with me at the back and went over some documents and the names of the people attending with me. I felt glad to have him with me and smiled at him.
“Seth Simmons, it’s been awhile”, I heard someone address him when we entered the building.
“Well Baron, you do know I don’t have enough time on my hands like some people right”, he said seriously to the man giving me a fair knowledge about how tense their relationship was.
“Won’t you introduce this young lady beside you to me, dear Seth?”, he said looking at me.
“Who she is has…….”, he started to say but I cut him off knowing he wasn’t going to answer him.
“I’m Penelope Whyte, his assistant”, I said not wanting to make a big deal about who I was.
“His assistant? Well that’s new. I guess Marcus wasn’t enough for you after all”, he said smirking at him.
“Let him be, Baron”, Marcus tried to ease the situation.
“Well nice to meet you Ms. Whyte”, he said stretching his hand to me for a shake.
“Likewise Mr. Donovan”, I said shaking his hand but instead of just shaking my hand, he pulled me to him startling me in the process and whispered to me “A girl who knows what she wants. You can always come to me when he doesn’t want you anymore”. He moved away from me but not before placing a kiss on the back of my hand and smirked at me leaving me confused.
‘What just happened?’, I thought and followed after an upset Seth and Marcus as they left to the conference room.
After a long and stressful meeting of listening and taking notes, we ended the meeting but Seth still looked upset and I didn’t understand because the meeting went on well for everyone.
“Ms. Whyte”, I heard someone call from behind. I turned to find Baron approaching us quickly. I looked at Seth to check his reaction to see that he had stopped with an unreadable expression on his face. I waited for him to catch up to me.
“Is there a problem, Mr. Donovan?”, I asked when he caught up to me.
“Just Baron is fine and there is no problem. I just wanted to give you this”, he said giving me his business card.
I turned to look Seth’s direction only to find him still waiting for me.
“Um okay”, I said and took the card from him. Just as I did that Seth walked away towards the elevator leaving me alone with Baron.
“And don’t forget what I said earlier, I meant everything”, he said and smiled genuinely at me.
“Thank you and see you later”, I said and left to follow after Seth and Marcus but not before hearing Baron mutter an “interesting”.
I tried to catch up to them and just as I did the elevator closed with Seth’s upset face staring at me.
‘What did I do now?’, I thought and joined the people using the other elevator, hoping they were still waiting for me.
I found the car and walked towards them and found out that Marcus was the one driving this time round and Seth sat in the passenger’s seat. The ride back was an awkward and tense one.
“How was today for you?”, Marcus asked trying to break the tension in the car, but boy was he wrong.
“It was great. I learned a lot and…….”, I started to say but couldn’t finish because Seth scoffed at what I said.
“You really learned a lot today”, he mocked me.
“What is that supposed to mean?”, I asked suddenly feeling confident.
“This is why I find female assistants annoying. They go about being loyal and when another guy comes their way, they forget and jump to the new person without a single thought”, he said loud enough for me to hear.
“Dude, chill out”, Marcus warned him.
“What loyalty are you going on all about? Do you see me selling confidential information to your competitors or see me sleeping around for positions in other companies?”, I said getting angry at him ignoring the warning signs going off in my head.
“Who says that can’t happen later”
“You, you’re unbelievable you know. He just gave me his business card, and whether I call or not has nothing to do with you. It’s not like I belong to you or something, I’m just an intern for 3 months and after that who knows when we’ll meet again. What I do with my free time has nothing to do with you”, I said exhausted by how much I spoke and how tired I was with his bipolar attitude.
“You belong to me. Every part of yours is mine”, he said pissing me off.
“Belong to you? Seth can you even hear yourself? The only relationship between us is that of an employer and an employee. The only time we spend on each other and with each other is for work and nothing else, what I do with the rest is none of your business”, I said and saw that Marcus had stopped the car.
“Will both of you just stop?”, he said trying to diffuse the situation.
“Get out”, we heard Seth say. Thinking he was talking to me, I tried opening my door but found it still locked.
“Marcus get out”, he said again and this time I heard the lock open. Both front doors opened at the same time and before I could get out, my side of the door was opened and Seth entered. I opened my mouth to ask what was going on only to be attacked by his lips. He kissed me as though trying to devour and claim me at the same time. I guess I was very frustrated because I kissed him back with the same intensity. I felt sensitive everywhere he touched that I was scared I was going to pass out from over-sensitivity. Just as things were about to get more heated we heard a knock on the door window and were brought back to the present. We organized our clothes and tried to look our best whiles Marcus entered the car smirking at us.
“I do not want to be an uncle this early”, he said loud for us to hear leaving me as a blushing mess.
We both knew the kiss was not an act of love but rather a release of pent up frustration and tension between us, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t affected either.
‘I guess I won’t be getting any sleep today either’, I thought.
