Hyunjin stepped into the house, the silence greeting him as the door closed softly behind him. He sighed, glancing at the clock and feeling the familiar pang of guilt—he was late again. The soft glow from the living room drew him in, and his heart melted at the sight that met his eyes.
Jeongin, his beautiful husband, was asleep on the couch, holding their one-year-old baby boy, Eunwoo, in his arms. Eunwoo’s chubby cheeks pressed against Jeongin’s chest, his little hands clutching his father’s shirt. The peaceful scene was almost enough to erase Hyunjin’s exhaustion, but the guilt lingered, stronger than ever.
Hyunjin moved closer, his fingers gently brushing Eunwoo's soft hair. The baby stirred slightly but remained in his blissful slumber. As Hyunjin’s hand caressed Eunwoo’s back, Jeongin’s eyes fluttered open. He blinked sleepily, then a warm, loving smile spread across his face when he saw Hyunjin.
"You're home," Jeongin whispered, his voice still thick with sleep.
Hyunjin smiled back, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to Jeongin’s lips. "I’m sorry I’m late again," he murmured, his guilt evident in his eyes.
Jeongin shook his head slightly, still smiling. "It’s okay. You’re here now."
Hyunjin carefully lifted Eunwoo from Jeongin’s arms, cradling the baby against his chest. Eunwoo shifted, making a small noise but quickly settled back into sleep, secure in his father’s embrace.
Jeongin stood up, stretching his neck and shoulders. “How was work?” he asked softly, watching as Hyunjin gently rocked Eunwoo.
“Long,” Hyunjin admitted, his eyes never leaving Eunwoo’s peaceful face. “But this makes it worth it.”
Jeongin moved closer, resting his head on Hyunjin’s shoulder and placing a soft kiss on Eunwoo’s forehead. “We missed you,” he said quietly.
Hyunjin’s heart ached with love and guilt. “I missed you both too,” he replied, his voice thick with emotion. “I promise I’ll try to be home earlier from now on.”
Jeongin nodded, understanding the unspoken pressures of Hyunjin’s work. “We know you’re doing your best,” he assured, his hand gently rubbing Hyunjin’s back.
They stood like that for a while, the comfort of each other’s presence easing the day’s stresses. Eventually, Jeongin straightened and gave Hyunjin a tender smile. “Let’s put him to bed,” he suggested.
Hyunjin nodded, carefully transferring Eunwoo into Jeongin’s waiting arms. Together, they walked to Eunwoo’s nursery, the soft glow of the nightlight casting a warm hue over the room. Jeongin laid Eunwoo down in his crib, tucking him in with gentle hands. The baby sighed contentedly, his tiny hand clutching his blanket.
Hyunjin stood by the crib, watching the serene expression on his son’s face. He felt Jeongin’s hand slip into his, and he squeezed it gently. They left the nursery quietly, closing the door behind them. Hyunjin wrapped his arm around Jeongin’s shoulders, leading them both towards their bedroom. “Come to sleep,” he said softly, his voice laced with affection.
Jeongin, still a bit groggy, glanced up at him. “Are you going to sleep on an empty stomach? Did you eat something?”
Hyunjin shook his head, a sheepish smile tugging at his lips. “Nope, I didn’t get the chance. And y-.”
