CHAPTER 1
SANG"Must stay quiet and not move " I think to myself as I'm hiding in the closet in the basement of our new home. I hear my parents arguing upstairs in their room that is over the closet.
"Why did we have to bring that whore child with us to our new home? Why couldn't we have left her on the side of some never traveled road on the way here from Illinois? I never knew why you didn't just dump her at some hospital or even a dumpster after you took her from your whore of a cousin after she died." I hear my mother saying. I really dont understand what she is saying other than my name Whore child as my mother and older sister Marie always calls me and my father calls me Sang.
"I promised her mother I'll take care of her until she can be on her own when she is 18. Only little over year left." I here my father saying back. "I need to go to my new office and fill out paperwork then I'll get some groceries. I'm not sure how long I will be." I hear footsteps leaving the room up above and opening and closing of the front door.
I then hear the lock on the basement door unlock and hear my mother yelling down the stairs "WHORE CHILD GET UP HERE AND START CLEANING AND UNBOXING OUR STUFF NOW."
I come out my hiding place with my head down walking up the stairs. Trying to walk quietly as mother hated when I make a sound saying I give her a migraine. As I walk by she shoves me yelling "Move faster I don't have all day"
I start to clean and put stuff away. After a few hours having put all the kitchen and living room stuff away I head upstairs to unpack and clean Marie's room as I open her door I get shoved in to a wall the cleaning supplies falling out my arms to the floor. " Mom the whore child came into my room and threw everything on to my floor" my sister squeaks loudly. Then she smirks at me.
"WHORE CHILD PICK EVERYTHING UP AND GET DOWN HERE' I hear my mother scream. I pick everything up glad none of the cleaning bottles broke and head back downstairs knowing mother was going to punish me. As I came to my mother she grabs me by the shoulder pulls me into the kitchen. "Put that stuff away." She points to under the sink. As I put the cleaning supplies away mother is getting a bag that has dry rice and a wooden spoon that has letters saying Woody on it. Least I think that's what is written on it as she always calls it "Woody". She pours the dry rice in corner of the kitchen then grabs me by shoulder again and takes "Woody" and smacks my thighs with it. I whimper inside my head even if I make no sound. Then she pushes me facing corner and forces me down on my knees onto the dry rice. I still don't make a sound. I'm crying inside my head.
Few hours later father come home sees me kneeling in the rice. "Can't you behave for a few hours. Get up clean up that mess and go back downstairs." My father saids before putting the groceries away.
I get up slowly and sweep up the rice and then go back to my basement room. As I go down the stairs I look around and see the a big sink next to the washing machine and turn it on low as to not make any noise and clean my sore knees with some colored paper towels that was next to it. I've never seen colored paper towels before. I think its blue. Marie use to color and like the color blue. After cleaning my knees I go over to a window that's high up on wall and can see the grass and trees outside.
I hear people talking outside even if can't tell what they saying and look outside. There is a house with a fence around it with a big bowl of water. There are a bunch of boys talking by it. One boys looks my way and waves and all the other boys look as I hide under the window hoping Mother or Marie didn't see him wave at me.
Few hours later father comes down the stairs and hands me a pack of cheese crackers and a bottle of water. "There is your dinner, Sang" he saids. Then he walks back upstairs. I take a cracker out and slowly eats it with the water and puts rest away in a baggie to keep rest for later, in case I dont get food anymore food. Mother dont always give me food.
I go to my bed made from old blankets on the floor and try to sleep. Knowing mother will have me up later to clean in the morning early.
