I Play Chicken With A TwisterTHE SUN CASTED shadows of her figure onto the checkered floor of the gas station diner. Connie pushed around the crumbs of her waffle with her fork, ordering two stacks, a superstition she hadn't dropped since she was a kid.
"What do you think is going to happen today?" Ryan wonders, sitting across the table in their booth. "How is that radar looking?" Connie asks, playing with her puddle of syrup.
"Look's like it's back drafting south." He says, looking at his tablet. She furrowed her brow looking over to his side. "And what do you think will happen?" She asks him.
"Realistically speaking I think it's going to build up that way, then shift for the east," Ryan explained to her, and she nodded. "Are you sure?" She wonders.
"Uh..I think so yeah..is that the wrong answer?" He ponders. Her lips formed a thin line as she shook her head.
"There isn't a right or wrong in this case," Connie reassured him, and he smiled nervously. "How did you get into this?" She wonders, he licked his lips.
"Well I uh where I grew up we got a lot of tornados, and in the village, we all would huddle in the church to take cover," Ryan recalls to her, rubbing the back of his neck.
"It destroyed a lot of the homes, I saw stuff that most ten-year-olds shouldn't see." He says grimly.
"Short story, I want to know why they happen, and how I can help." Ryan sighed. "What about you?" He asks, she shrugs.
"Nothing crazy, a couple of summers with my uncle, and now I'm here." She summarized.
"It's complicated than that." A voice spoke up, and Aiden sat beside Ryan, shoving him into the wall.
"Dont tell him." Connie pleaded, and he shrugged. "Why it's a good story." He says he clears his throat.
"How about I tell him about the Yukon Incident." She challenged, sitting back crossing. Aiden's smile dropped.
"You wouldn't dare?" He squinted his eyes. "What happened in Yukon?" Ryan wonders.
Aiden playfully glared at his best friend, she smirked seeing him flustered."You want to tell him or should I?" Connie insisted. He rolled his brown eyes,
"What happened was you going outside and pumping the gas." Aiden changed the subject. Connie chuckled, as she ushered the young boy away"I want to know what happened?" Ryan protested with a smile. "No, you don't move your ass," Aiden grumbled, pushing him out the door.
He turned to look at the woman laughing at the booth. I hate you, he mouthed. Connie blows him a kiss, as the bell to the diner door rings closed.
She sighed, goosebumps covering her arm. A taste of grief filled her mouth, replacing her coffee breath. Connie looked down the rows of tables, a few truckers, regular customers, and the storm chasers.
