Violet's pov

Dain corners me the next day, his eyes worried but not without the disbelief in them. I glance at Y/n in the far spot in the corridor, in the midst if her marked ones family.

'Are you sure?' Dain asks me for the second time. I had told him I swear I heard Amber Mavis was behind the attack last night, and Y/n herself had confirmed so.

'Yes, Dain.' I say, turning a little defensive at the fact that he does not believe me. Dain, my best friend, who I even had a little crush on since years ago, not believing my words when I had my life endangered only hours before.

'But- but she's my friend, Violet. She's not someone who would do something like this.' He replies, and I sigh in frustration. I wonder if me explaining this over and over would work. I open my mouth to argue only to be cut off by a familiar voice. Sweet, but lethal all at the same time.

'Are you suggesting that I was just imagining Amber Mavis attacking me?' I turn, Dain's brows furrowing instantly as he sees Y/n, her sleek figure moving in immaculate grace for someone who was just lying in the infirmary bed with a deep stab wound. She stands in front of us, plump cherry lips curling. I retreat at her somehow overwhelming presence even when she is short enough for me to look in the eye without looking up much.

'She gave me this, for your evidence.' She points at her collarbone, yanking her collar down to show the bandages going over her shoulder and secured around her front. 'And for what. For being smart to get over the gauntlet? Bitch deserves to burn-'

'Watch your tongue.' I gasp as Dain growls, towering over Y/n as he shoves her against the wall. 'I don't believe the shit that comes out of your mouth.' He says, Y/n glaring at him as if to put a hole through his eyes.

'You don't like me suggesting to kill your... friend. But your best friend was almost dead already.' Y/n taunts, and I feel the dread creeping over me just watching the two of them.

If your stupid friend doesn't take his hands off of her now, I will smash his skull in my bare hands.

I hear Xaden's voice in my head, and I shudder at the thought. I'd deal with Dain myself later.

'Dain. You have to let her go.' I pull at his arm, he doesn't budge. 'It's Xaden.' I whisper, and I cringe slightly at Dain finally lowering his eyes and stepping away from Y/n. Y/n only gives him a devilish smile as Riorson appears in the end of the corridor.

'Not afraid of me but... terrified of the wingleader, I see. But then again, you are stupid enough to trust Mavis.' She mocks, Dain's eyes flashing dangerously before Xaden steps in front of Y/n, blocking Dain from her.

'You'd better have a very good reason for laying your hands on Cadet L/n against my orders for you to stay out of her way.' I feel the chills down my back at his voice, secretly thanking the dragons' bond. At least they would not be able to kill me.

Y/n's pov

You watch Xaden's shoulders tense, Aetos somehow looking like he's shrunk in front of Xaden. Classic asshole type to appear strong in front of those who they think is weaker but then real quick to retreat when someone stronger comes along.

Xaden reaches his hand behind him, holding your fingers in his. You feel your heart flutter even though the situation itself was far from looking cute as Xaden glares at Aetos.

'You can't just trust her words just because she's your girlfriend. Like I can't blindly believe Cadet Sorrengail because she's my friend.' Astos argues, very quick to find his temper back in front of Xaden to your irritation.

'He's insufferable, I know.'

'Shhh.'

'Don't tell me what to do, Cherry.'

You ignore Hwad, focusing back to the situation.

'I need evidence. A solid one.' Aetos replies, and you feel your head feeling hotter at the fact that he had just dismissed the wound you showed him. And everyone in the corridor. 'If she can let me read her memories to prove so, I will believe her.' He says, and you feel Xaden's hand clutch yours harder. Violet gulps, her only eyeing the three of you nervously.

Gods, she's so shaky. And what for? She's got the strongest dragon.

'I am the strongest.'

'Huh. I thought all dragons were terrified of Tairn.' You reply, as Xaden speaks malicious words to Aetos, stepping closer to his blood drained face.

'I'm not like the others.'

'Didn't know dragons could be a pick-me.'

'Not a pick-me if it's true.' Hwad replies, going silent without waiting for your response. Before you catch up to what's happening, Aetos reaches for your face. A brave one at that, seeing Xaden is still guarding you behind him.

'You'll do no such thing.' He says, shoving Aetos back hard enough for him to stumble. 'I do not need your help or approval to raise this to the leadership. Amber Mavis, and the remaining cadets involved in this will be punished as seen fit.' Xaden says, pushing past bewildered Aetos and Violet, pulling you along. You follow him towards the flight field for formation, his arm around you attracting attention.

Xaden's pov

After a few days of walking, me and Garrick taking turns to carry Y/n, she was finally healed enough to walk on her own. Still yet to run or move excessively, but enough as we stood in front of an unfamiliar house. The lady and the housekeeper grinning at our solemn faces covered in filth.

'Come on in, kids.' The lady says, some other orphans peeking through the open door nervously.

'Come on.' I say to the others, holding Y/n's hand in mine. I reach out to Liam on my other side, him gripping my fingers too. Then Imogen in Liam's, Garrick, Bodhi. The six of us link hands together.

'We'll survive. The six of us.' I say, and the six of us step into our new home.
