Violet's pov

The first squad battle in the War Games is to retrieve the egg from the other squad's area while keeping ours safe. I look to our opponent, my dread only growing larger as I realise we are battling Jack Barlowe's.

'We go, Silver One.' Tairn says, and I nod, getting on top of his back onto the saddle. I look up seeing a flash of red, Y/n's red daggertail in front of me with her on the saddle as well.

'Don't die, or else I'll kill you myself.' She says, her eyes flashing as she gives me a glare before her cherry lips disappear from my view, her dragon taking off into the sky.

Okay, brutal

Not that she can actually kill me, because one, we're in the same squad, and two, Xaden.

'At least you changed out of our wingleader's flight jacket!.' Ridoc says jockingly at her back soaring into the sky, Y/n managing a middle finger without even turning around.

'No time for messing around, Cadets.' Our squad leader says, and Tairn quickly ascents into the sky, following the red daggertail.

As expected, Rhiannon, Y/n, and I are on the offensive, the others playing defense for our egg while the three of us try to get to the egg on the other side. Well. It wasn't a surprise for Rhiannon and Y/n given their signets, useful when on the offensive side, but I am not feeling too great about myself. Despite the lightning signet, and the grey clouds now starting to surround the area, I could not aim. Honestly, it is a pain in the ass since I could just destroy everything and everywhere.

It was unlike Y/n's or Rhiannon's, that power came in little steps over the past few weeks, letting me get used to holding that much power and thus learn to control it little by little. Not that I even mastered summoning it in the first place.

I watch Y/n in front of me scare off one of the cadets with her burning flames covering her hand. Shuddering at the red flames flecked with gold spreading into the empty air, I follow.

Y/n's pov

'Don't look so smug, Cherry.' Hwad says as you and Hwad swoop past another rider attempting to snatch their egg back to the flagpost. Soaring in the air while the others tried to get their crystal back from your grip was satisfying, blowing the steam off after the disaster of the solstice. It was starting to feel like you had control over something, and connected to the others for the first time in months.

'Well, I am the best rider of our year.' You reply, holding onto Hwad's back as she ascents away from the incoming First Wing rider, their crystal egg tucked safely under your other arm. The other Cadet rides back up to chase you, their defense players flying towards you from the front at full speed.

'Here we go.' Hwad says cheerily, twisting her usual 360-degree turn to deflect the three of them. You let the crimson-gold flames sizzle between your fingertips, the heat preventing them from daring to come any closer. Despite the terrible stomach churn the turn always gives you, you feel yourself laugh as the First Wing cadets curse in frustration. You see your goalpost in the distance, and your lips curl at the victory right in front of your face.

'What a show-off.' Hwad grumbles at your flames, although you hear her pride in her voice.

'Go! Y/n!' You hear Liam's voice from your right, slightly behind you. Turning, you see him with his hands up in the air, grinning widely as you fly towards the finish line. For a second, you wonder if your friends now only see you as an asset like everyone else in Basgiath, like you had to be useful to be acknowledged. But you decide to brush the thought off, turning back to the target in front of you.
