The morning sun pierced through the blinds, casting harsh streaks of light across the dorm room. Maleficent squinted as she groaned in frustration, throwing her blanket off with more force than necessary.
"UGH, I ALREADY HATE THIS PLACE!" she declared, her voice echoing off the walls.
Uliana, half-buried under her own covers, groaned in protest. "Ugh, and we've only been here for a week," she muttered in a much lower, grumpier tone. The night before, the two girls had spent fifteen minutes trying to shut the blinds to keep the sun out, but it had been futile. The rays were unrelenting, and sleep was now impossible.
It was 7 a.m., far too early by both girls' standards, but they knew there was no going back to sleep. Defeated, they climbed out of bed, groggily pulling on their clothes and getting ready to face another day at Merlin Academy. The new school year was set to start the next morning, but everyone had arrived early to get settled in, meet their roommates, and get a feel for the enormous grounds.
The only silver lining was that Maleficent and Uliana had lucked out with their dorm assignment. They were in a double room with no goody-two-shoes third roommate to ruin their peace. So far, they hadn't met anyone particularly interesting, although they had explored much of the school and even ventured into the nearby forest.
Once dressed, they headed out into the bright morning, making their way to the school's vast garden at its center. It was peaceful... at least for a moment... until an annoyingly bubbly voice shattered the silence.
"HIIIIII! I'm Bridget! Remember me? We met a few days ago. I offered you cookies, but you... um... threw them in the bushes."
Maleficent's face twisted in distaste. "Ugh, not her again."
Bridget, undeterred, smiled even wider and held out a tray of freshly baked cookies. "I changed the recipe! Would you like to try these?"
Uliana didn't even attempt to hide her laughter. "Listen, weird baking girl, we didn't want your stupid cookies before, and we sure as hell don't want them now." With a casual flick of one of her tentacles, she sent the tray flying into a nearby wall, scattering the cookies everywhere.
Bridget's smile faltered, her pink cheeks flushing slightly in embarrassment. But she quickly picked up the tray, brushing off the ruined cookies. "Oh, um, well... bye!" she stammered before hurrying away, still trying to keep her sunny disposition intact.
Uliana burst out laughing, nudging Maleficent. "And she still tries. That is so lame."
Maleficent smirked, her eyes dark with amusement. "Yeah, I've never seen anyone so desperate."
Their laughter was cut short by a slow clap from behind them. The girls turned to see three boys standing nearby, watching the entire scene unfold. The one in the middle, a tall, dark-haired boy with an air of arrogance, stepped forward, still clapping.
"What a show!" he said, his voice smooth and amused. He was clearly impressed, though the way his lips curled into a smirk made it hard to tell if he was being sincere or mocking.
Maleficent and Uliana exchanged a glance, neither sure what to make of him. Before they could respond, he continued, stepping closer.
"We just wanted to say that you gave that girl a real reality check," he said, his eyes fixed on Uliana as he took her hand. "You handled that brilliantly."
Uliana raised an eyebrow, yanking her hand back with a disgusted look. "And you are?"
The boy grinned, completely unfazed by her reaction. "The name's Hook," he said, bowing slightly as if he were some kind of prince. "And these are Morgie and Hades."
The other two boys, standing slightly behind James, looked less charismatic, though they still smiled at the girls. But Hook's ego was so loud that it was hard to pay attention to anyone else.
Maleficent blinked, unsure how to respond. James turned his attention to her, taking her hand now and pressing a light kiss to her knuckles. "Your presence, however, made everything even more beautiful."
Her heart skipped a beat, and for the first time in a long while, she found herself completely thrown off guard. No one had ever spoken to her like that, and she didn't quite know how to react. She felt her face heat up, and her usual confidence faltered.
Uliana, noticing her roommate's unexpected silence, crossed her arms and eyed Hook suspiciously. "So why exactly do you feel the unstoppable need to compliment us?"
Hook smirked, clearly enjoying the attention. "Can't we compliment some beautifully wicked girls when we see them?" His voice was teasing, but there was a certain charm behind it that made him hard to ignore.
"Ugh, tone down the flattery, Romeo," Uliana muttered, rolling her eyes in annoyance.
Hook raised his hands in mock surrender, the smirk never leaving his face. "Alright, alright. No more flattery." He paused, glancing between the two of them. "But would you ladies like to join us for lunch? No compliments this time, I promise."
Uliana looked at Maleficent, clearly waiting for her to say something, but her friend was still caught up in whatever spell James had cast with his smooth words and charming smile. Uliana let out a frustrated sigh and shrugged.
"Fine. Let's get this over with," she muttered, clearly unimpressed but curious enough to play along.
The five of them made their way toward the cafeteria. James walked confidently between the two girls, still smirking, while Morgie and Hades trailed behind, exchanging glances.
As they entered the bustling cafeteria, Maleficent finally managed to shake off the flustered feeling that Hook had stirred up in her. She wasn't used to being caught off guard like that, and it annoyed her more than she wanted to admit. But as they sat down with their new companions, she couldn't help but feel that maybe... just maybe... this place wouldn't be so bad after all.
