The silence behind the door was discouraging. Rachel's self doubt had clawed it's way out of its box the closer she got to Joseph's place. The rational part of her also suggested how irresponsible it was for her to go to such a conflicted man's home after only a few meetings. Still, she knocked. She stifled her sigh of relief when Joseph Maxwell opened the door. So many things came at her then. Some that surprised her, and some that didn't.

Fear, desire. Insecurity, aggression.

"You came?" Surprise, gratitude. Relief, angst.

"I did." Rachel wondered if he could sense the conflicting emotions within her as well. Joseph gave her a once over and she instantly regretted her choice of attire.

"You're back."

The regret vanished and she nodded. "I am." She stopped, weighing her next words. "Thanks, to you."

Joseph invited her in and took her coat. Rachel eagerly swept her eyes across the space, disappointed to find nothing to give away any details about him.

"What are you observing?" he asked.

"Nothing."

"The empath in you, what is she observing?"

"Is this a session, Mr. Maxwell?" There was no response so Rachel sighed and looked around once more. "I'm disappointed to see that I won't learn anything more about you through your home. It's bare."

"But?"

"But, I'm wondering if that in itself says something about you. Most men keep their homes simple, but yours truly lacks character. There's nothing personal."

"And?"

"And I think you're someone who doesn't allow himself any pleasures. You're punishing yourself, aren't you?"

"That's enough."

Rachel wanted to go further, now that she had started, but knew better and pressed her lips together to keep from talking.
