Ambulance sirens, the muffled concerns of others, and Jisung's screams of pain were all that could be heard. The girl watched in horror as the medics placed Jisung's bloody body on the stretcher and loaded him into the ambulance.
People moved around, squishing the girl's frame as she tried to move closer. Her heart was beating erratically as hot tears streamed down her cheeks. The authorities stopped everyone from getting further by blocking the path.
All Naeun could do was cry, crouching down from to the ground and burying her head in her knees. He had been lucky last time, but this time the girl's fears really came true.
Her heart felt like it was burning. The sirens of the ambulance mixed with Jisung's piercing screams rang in her ears. She plugged her fingers in her ears to block out the noise, taking multiple deep breaths to calm herself down.
He's in the ambulance, surely he'll be fine
The screams mean he's still alive
He'll be okayBut what if...
Her mind was clouded with those 'what if' thoughts. And when she heard the screams stop and a medic yelling something about losing consciousness, her heart dropped further. Her breath was coming out in heavy, erratic gasps, tears clouding her vision.
She tugged at her hair, watching as the ambulance drove away and the crowds of people grew smaller. The girl couldn't move. She couldn't do anything. Chenle and Juri rushed to her side, but she didn't spare a glance to either of them.
Naeun smacked her hands to her ears, her head feeling extremely light. The hair on her arms stood up as goosebumps formed all over her skin. Her brain was jumping to all of the worst conclusions as she sat there.
"Hey, stand up," Juri said softly, trying to help the girl to her feet. Chenle was trying to offer some water, but the girl wasn't replying.
That's when she saw him. The man coming out of the opponent's car.
"Miss me, sweetheart?"
Her head snapped up, immediately recognizing the voice. Chenle and Juri looked up too, eyes widening at the sight.
"We put you in jail, how are you back?" Juri said in disbelief as Chenle subconsciously covered Naeun.
"Bail," he said casually, taking long strides over to the three. "You look really happy after seeing what I just did to your boyfriend," his menacing eyes were trained on Naeun.
Naeun gritted her teeth, trying to calm her breathing. "Why would you do that to him?! He did nothing to you!"
"It's simple, really," he chuckled lowly, stopping right in front of the three of them. "If I can't have you, then no one should."
"You're sick, you stupid bitch!" Juri cursed at him.
"Oh, I'm aware," said Daehan. He turned back to Naeun, pushing Chenle out of the way and gripping her chin tightly. "If only you had been obedient..."
"Get away from her, you creep!" Juri managed to punch him hard in the jaw, making him stumble back.
Daehan only cackled, not even paying attention to the blood dripping from his teeth. "Go on, punch me. It doesn't matter, when he's already almost half dead."
As soon as Daehan left, Naeun turned back into the mess she was before he came. She tugged on her roots, eyes squeezing shut as she buried her face in her knees.
They managed to get her into Chenle's car as he drove to the hospital. Juri stayed in the backseat with Naeun, holding the panicked girl in her arms as she tried to calm her down.
They arrived at the hospital not long after and were taken in the back where the emergency operation room was. The three waited outside on the benches with heavy hearts. Naeun had calmed down for the most part, but that didn't mean her heart was in the right place.
The hours passed and there was absolutely no sign on whether the boy was okay or not. Naeun picked at her nails, her eyes glancing over at the doors of the emergency operation room every few minutes.
A doctor emerged from the room a few minutes after the clock struck midnight. The three rushed to him, hope in their eyes.
"How is he?" Juri asked.
"Are you three here for Park Jisung?" He asked, and the three nodded.
The doctor cleared his throat, expression neutral as he spoke up. "The surgery was a success, however...." he trailed off.
"However?" Naeun repeated, tilting her head in confusion.
"His brain cells were heavily injured during the accident, resulting in him slipping into a coma. We are unsure when he will wake up."
"...or if he'll wake up at all."
