Three weeks. It had been three weeks since Jisung had been in a coma. He showed no signs of waking up and doctors were losing hope. Naeun, Juri, and Chenle had been visiting the boy everyday they could, talking to him in hopes that he would hear them and wake up. But alas, he stayed in the deep slumber.

Everyday was the same routine. Naeun attended her college classes before heading to the hospital with Juri and Chenle, staying by the lifeless boy's side and talking to him about her day and how much she missed him until visiting hours were over.

Some days she felt so sick that she had to skip college, other days she simply cried while gazing at the Pandora ring he bought for her. She hadn't been able to get a good night's sleep either, the nightmare recurring.

She was sprawled out on her bed, snuggling with her stuffed teddy bear. Her eyes were dry and red, face tight from tear stains. She was clinging onto the bear like her life depended on it. The girl had no more tears left to cry, she just lay there without any thoughts in her mind.

Juri, who had tried to act optimistic, entered the depressed girl's bedroom, sighing. "You haven't come out all day. Come on, you need to get some vitamin d girl."

"I'm getting enough vitamin d from the light from my window," she murmured, burying her face deeper into the stuffed bear.

Juri shook her head, walking over to the girl and ripping the blanket off of her. "We're going on a walk, that's final. And put some clothes on in the house, dammit! I don't want to see your bare ass cheeks while I'm walking around!"

"Yeah yeah whatever," she mumbled, sitting up and rubbing at her head. "I'm coming, wait outside."

She stood up, stretching her aching limbs before walking over to her closet. She changed into whatever she found first, which happened to be a baggy graphic t-shirt and black biker shorts.

After getting ready, she tied her hair up in a ponytail and popped a piece of gum in her mouth before heading outside to the living room where Juri was waiting.

"Ready," she lazily said, stuffing her hands in her pockets.

The two left the dorm together, walking down the sidewalks. The sun was shining brightly, a slight breeze swaying as kids played around. The environment was happy and bright, unlike Naeun's mood.

They walked down the streets, stopping to window shop for a bit before continuing their walk. Naeun's lips remained downcast, mostly glancing at the concrete during the walk. It did feel nice to finally be getting some fresh air after a while, but the girl just wasn't in the right mood.

She tried to focus on the nice weather and the pretty trees, but her mind kept going back to the image of Jisung laying lifeless in the hospital bed, multiple tubes and wires connected to him just to keep him stable.

She fiddled with a loose string on her t-shirt, eyeing a nearby ice cream parlor. "Let's go there," she mumbled lazily.

"Okay, princess," Juri sighed, taking Naeun's hand and walking them over to the ice cream parlor she was pointing at.

The smell of fresh ice cream and the sound of happy kids running around filled Naeun's ears as they entered. There was a small table for two by the window where they sat.

Juri could tell the girl was still downcast and she pursed her lips. She had been trying to do everything she could, knowing how much Jisung meant to her.

The girl herself was hurting inside, but she put up an optimistic front for Naeun. It was a difficult time for all of them but moping around wouldn't change anything or make it better.

Naeun hadn't spoken a word as she ate her mint chocolate chip ice cream. Her eyes were trained on the view out of the window. It was her favorite flavor, yet it was barely even touched as she barely took licks from it.

They each paid for their own ice creams before leaving the parlor. Naeun's mood had lifted in the slightest after a random little kid complimented her.

The girl had been thinking. Knowing Jisung's career, something like this could very much happen again, and it could be even worse than it had been now. Naeun knew she very well couldn't handle that kind of pain. She was never good at handling pain.

She decided that she try to put as much distance between them as possible. Sure, they could remain friends, but that would be where it ends. No more hugging for extended periods, no more laying their heads in each other's laps, no more flirting.

Because friends don't do that.

Naeun knew it would just end up hurting the both of them, but it was the only way she could protect herself from the pain. Since she was a kid, the girl was overly sensitive. If a situation like this repeated, Naeun didn't know how she would cope.

She chose to prioritize her mental health first.
