It had been an hour since Naeun received the news of Jisung slipping into a coma. She had not even been able to see him, since it was too late at night. The girl lay awake in her bed, staring up at the ceiling. Tears stains were visible on her porcelain skin, her eyes red and puffy.
She spun the Pandora ring on her finger, her mind running with a million thoughts at once. And even though the girl was an atheist, she found herself praying for Jisung to wake up from his coma and be healthy again.
Unable to sleep, she swung her legs off of the bed and left her room. She walked to the kitchen, getting a glass out of the cupboard before filling it with coconut milk. Naeun put the cup in the microwave and leaned against the counter, her finger tapping on the granite surface.
Once it was done, she took it out, waiting for it to cool off before taking big sips. Setting the empty glass down on the counter, the girl sighed and stretched her arms. Her face felt tight from the dried up tears and it felt as if her heart was lodged in her throat, making it hard to breathe.
Regret was the main emotion she felt. Regret for letting herself get too attached. Regret for letting her walls be torn down. Regret for gaining such feelings for someone she knew she wasn't supposed to.
She regretted letting him get too close, regretted that she didn't set up proper boundaries as friends. She ran a hand through her tangled hair, tears threatening to spill yet again. It was like all she could do was cry. And when the tears would finally stop, they came back even stronger.
Naeun went back to her room, wiping her eyes with the hem of her sleeve as she made her way back to her bed. She laid back down, pulling the covers over her as she closed her eyes, tears falling down her face for the nth time today.
. . .
"Come on, let's go to the hospital," Juri grabbed her car keys and the two girls left the dorm.
Naeun opened the door to the passenger side, getting into the car as Juri started the engine. She stared out the window, praying for good news in her head. She didn't know what to expect, if he had either woken up or was still in a coma. But whatever it was, all she hoped was that he would recover safely.
The two arrived at the hospital after a thirty minute drive. They saw the doctor who had taken care of Jisung and approached him.
Naeun spoke up first, her eyes full of hope. "We're here for Park Jisung."
"Park Jisung, huh," he repeated, a neutral look on his face as he adjusted his rectangle glasses. "Come with me, ladies."
He led the two girls into his office. They sat down on the chairs as he sat in front of them, reading something on his computer screen before turning back to them.
"With a heavy heart, I would like to inform you that Park Jisung had unfortunately flatlined last night. I'm sorry for your loss."
A loss for words. That was their initial reaction. Naeun's body was shaking, her heart dropping all the way to her stomach as she clutched the material of her jeans.
Juri, who was crying herself, engulfed her in a big hug as they cried together.
"I can't imagine how you must feel right now," the doctor spoke. "The staff here and myself are always available if you need someone to talk to."
Her worst fear had come true. The feeling was the exact same, losing someone who was so important to her. She felt as if history was repeating itself. Or as if she was being punished by her loved ones slowly being taken away.
. . .
Naeun gasped, jolting awake as a cold sweat ran down her trembling figure. She hugged herself, gasping for air as hot flashes ran throughout her body. It was only a nightmare, but such a realistic one that she was left feeling frightened.
Tears ran down her face again, she had lost count of how many times she had cried today. Naeun hugged her knees close to her chest, gasping for air as she squeezed her eyes closed.
She clasped her hands together, praying for him over and over and over again. It was all she could do, cling on a sliver of hope.
