"Didn't think you even knew how to sleep in this late." A voice from the doorway pulled Yelena from her sleep. She knew that voice.

"Ah, Natasha. Knew it was only a matter of time before you had to stop by for a check in." She drawled as she pulled the blanket over her face in an effort to shield her eyes from the light.

"Just get dressed. I brought a case." Natasha shot back before flicking the light switch on and fleeing out the door.

Yelena screwed her eyes shut and groaned, grateful she had the blanket over her face. Siblings could age, but apparently their relationships dynamics could not.

After getting dressed Yelena quickly found her way to the coffee machine as her sister sat sipping a cup at the island. She reached for the cream in the corner and thought back to the first chess game she had with Y/N. Pushing it back against the wall she grabbed her cup and tried to mentally prepare for her sister.

"He's been here for 5 weeks Yelena. There has to be a next step." Natasha decided to start the conversation in the deep end, never known for her small talk.

"I thought you said you had a case?" Yelena deflected, still facing the counter with her back towards her sister.

"We can talk about that once everyone gets here, but now I'm talking to you." Natasha stated softly as she placed her own coffee on the counter, giving Yelena all of her attention.

"He's here because if he goes and gets picked back up by them, than our location is at risk." Yelena gave the excuse she'd been spitting out to all the girls who wouldn't stop asking. She wasn't ready for this conversation, she needed more time to figure out the rush of new emotions she'd been experiencing.

Freedom brought so many hard things but she never thought the hardest would be the thing she had longed for for so long. Choices. See, there were choices everyone else wanted her to take, choices she wanted to make, and choices she wanted that seemed completely out of her control. She was frustrated as all of that rolled inside of her and she didn't need Natasha here adding to the mix.

"You really believe that, or has that just worked with everybody else? Come on Yelena, he poses the same threat to the organization out there as he does in here. He obviously doesn't hold any useful information, it's best to cut ties as soon as we can. Whatever he gets himself into is on him and you know he doesn't know the exact location." Natasha continued to pry, bringing the mug back to her lips with her eyebrows pursed in question.

Yelena still hadn't been able to turn around. She knew she could still lie to her face and she wouldn't be able to tell a thing. Natasha didn't know her tells as an adult. Who's fault was that? An angry fire seeped into Yelena's veins, she felt it travel slowly and burn as it landed in her chest.

Yelena finally rounded on her sister unable to control the rage coarsing through her, "You don't get to talk to me like that. You don't get to talk to me like you know me better than anyone else."

"What are you talking about? I'm your sister, of course I do." Natasha pushed her mug to the side and leaned in attempting to get closer. Yelena withdrew a few feet back, breath hot as it pushed forcfully from her nose.

"No. You. Left." This wasn't supposed to be coming to the surface. Yelena knew even after forgiving Natasha that she still felt bitterness about the situation, but never bitter enought to throw it in her face. Until now apparently.

"You just left me there." Yelena's anger started to fizzle as she looked at the tile of the kitchen floor.

In terms of processing everything in her life she had been through, Yelena hadn't even started. As anger and sadness and fear and doubt and all of the things she'd never been allowed to feel started to creep in at once she didn't know how to handle it. It wasn't fair. She didn't grow up with parents, or curfews, or classmates. Mentally and developmentally, Yelena was stuck.
