RED. THAT'S ALL YOU SAW. bright, red flashing lights, blinding enough to shine through your translucent bedroom curtains. you rubbed your eyes, your head spinning from the blinking lights as you got up from your bed with an irritated grunt, opening your window to take a look at whatever was going on with your neighbour.

your neighbourhood was quiet and secluded, just the way you liked it. everyone in your neighbourhood was nice. there would be young parents taking their children to the playground nearby or your friend from college walking his dog in the evenings, and sometimes everyone comes together to celebrate holidays at a chosen house.

your little area was occupied by successful people. doctors, lawyers, artists and even some celebrities, one of which, was joshua hong, who was in a band that you didn't hear about often, but your friend often told you about his activities with his group seventeen, so you knew a decent amount, especially how famous the man is.

because of this, it was a private, closed off neighbourhood with maximum security. living in such a place came with barely any disruption, so you could only wonder what happened that had an ambulance coming by at nearly 2AM in the morning on a friday.

looking out at the crowd of medics and a few neighbours in their pyjamas or light clothing who came out due to the noise and light pollution, you frowned, but the floating questions in your head were shortly answered as joshua was laid on a stretcher, and brought to the ambulance.

even though your heart was filled with concern at the sight of your friendly neighbour unconscious, you wouldn't make it in time if you had sprinted down the stairs as the ambulance had already driven away.

for a few minutes, you stood frozen in your own bedroom, gazing off at the ambulance that drove further away the longer you stared. even though the flashing lights were gone, the pale, ill and unconscious state of joshua unsettled you deeply.

you weren't that close to him—knowing he was an idol, but you and him exchanged occasional waves, smiles and did each other favours like when he babysat your puppy when you were away for a few days due to work, or when he apologized non-stop for asking you to help him check if his gate was locked when he was all the way in japan during a tour.

yet, the sight of him being rushed into a van by paramedics stirred something within you.

"should i have checked on him sooner?" you muttered to yourself in worry, feeling a pang of guilt at the mere sight of such a weak version of the joshua you've known for a long while.

a few pings from your phone caught your attention, causing you to walk toward your bedside table and check on which groupchat was making so much ruckus this late. to no surprise—it was the neighbourhood groupchat, with a good amount of people from your secluded neighbourhood for the purpose of any emergency or announcements.

the groupchat flooded with questions about the sirens, and concerned gossip about joshua. the more you read, the more reality settled in. at this time, you decided you would visit joshua tomorrow, if he was already back by then.

although it definitely took you more than an hour to fall back asleep with the inconsistent beating of your own heart, you tossed and turned until the sun rose again. the sky was a nice shade of blue, and like every other sunday, there were many people out at the park with their pets or running laps around the neighbourhood while children tried to fly their kites, without the wind obeying to their wishes.
