11. Daughter-In-Law

POV ENGFA

My Mae is really excited about our visit. She is very supportive of Englot. Even last year, she openly invited Charlotte to come to her house.

They had the chance to meet a few times at various events, including at my last concert. My mother even asked if Charlotte and I would visit her as a friend of course at that time.

Today, Charlotte and I decided to go to my Mae's house for dinner because we both finished work early, so we could make the trip.

Mae had already been informed by P'Daad that Charlotte and I are officially dating but not in details, as she said to me the other day. According to my sister, Mae is very happy and wants to give us her blessing in person.

Charlotte is asleep in the passenger seat. I glance at her for a moment, she looks tired. Probably because our nighttime activities have been quite busy lately, if you know what I mean.

When we arrive at Mae's house, I gently shake her awake.
"Baby, we're here."

Charlotte opens her eyes. "Oh, I fell asleep the whole way, didn't I?" she says, rubbing her eyes. She looks so cute.

I kiss her shoulder. "It's okay, you must be tired, Baby," I say with a smile.

She nods. "Yeah, and oddly, it's not work-related fatigue. It's the pleasant kind of tiredness," she says, then pulls me in and kisses my lips.

I pulled back quickly.

I protest, "Hey, behave, Nuu! What if Mae sees us?" I say, glancing around playfully, but my smile never fades.

She laughs, then pouts, "Why?! I won't be able to kiss you for the next few hours. Let me be!"

She's fully sulking now. I laugh freely. And slapped her thigh lightly.

"Alright, alright. Okay. Let's go inside," I say, opening my car door and taking out the things from the back seat.

We decided to bring some gifts for my mom.

We enter the house and head towards the kitchen where Mae and P'Daad are arguing about something. Mae is scolding my sister while occasionally hitting her shoulder.

I approach them. "Mae! P'Daad!" I call out.

They turn to look at me, and Mae immediately sets down the sauce bottle she's holding to rush over to us.

P'Daad exclaims, "Mae! You just spilled the sauce on my clothes!" She protests. But Mae ignored her. Oh poor sister!

Mae kisses my cheek and hugs me. "Welcome, my lovely daughter. You must be tired from the long ride, right?" she says.

I nod and smile. Mae then turns to hug Charlotte. "Welcome, my dear Charlotte. Come, sit down," she says happily.

We put our things on the table near the TV area. P'Daad then comes over to greet and hug us as well.

"Your favorite child is here, and now I'm being ignored," P'Daad says, pretending to pout.

Mae slaps her arm. "I love all my children equally. Don't make Charlotte think I'm playing favorites!" she says, then looks at Charlotte again and smiles.

"Mae, it's been too long. I missed you," Charlotte says, holding my mom's hand.

Mae replies, "Oh, my dear, I missed you too. You should visit me often. It's okay if P'Fa isn't around. You can still come here," she says gently.

I protest, "What about me? Don't you miss me? This is real discrimination," I say.

"See? That's what I felt everytime!" P'Daad exclaims.

Mae gives me a deadpan look, then glares at P'Daad before smiling again at Charlotte.

"Ignore these two. Let's go to the kitchen. You should try my cooking and give me some feedback. Come on, Nong," she says, leading Charlotte to the kitchen. Linking her arm with Charlotte's.

"Look at that. Now there are two neglected children as soon as the princess arrives," P'Daad whispers to me.

"Let my princess be the favorite for now. If it gets too much, I'll just carry Charlotte back home," I whisper back.

Mae and Charlotte really are like mother and daughter now. Mae looks so happy. Even when we sit together at the dining table, Mae keeps feeding Charlotte, making P'Daad and me exchange glances. I can't help but smile, but I join in P'Daad's playfulness.

"You never fed me like that!" P'Daad says, raising her spoon towards Mae and Char.

And I chimed in, "Agreed, Mae even scolding me a while ago! just because I want to be fed!" I said playfully pouting.

Charlotte just holding a laugh at our antics.

Mae snickering, Dead panning at P'Daad "If I never fed you, how did you eat as a baby? Did the spoon float by it self to feed you! and you! "

she's looking at me now, "Mook! You're a grown up, you can eat by yourself. Stop being ridiculous."

Then looking at charlotte with sweet smile, "Mae's very sorry about these two rascal's behavior Nong Charlotte."

She's really smart with her answer, My Mae can be sassy too it seems. I can't help but laugh. "That's true tho, Eat by yourself Phi. Don't be spoiled." I say. Mocking P'Daad.

"You traitor, Whose side are you on!" P'Daad responds.

"This side?" I said while hugging my girl sideways. Charlotte looked at me and blushed, she couldn't help but pinch my cheek playfully.

Mae watched us with admiration, and then gave a thumbs up. I chuckled at that.. Oh.. what a perfect family.

After dinner, we watch TV together. Mae sits next to Charlotte. They're inseparable. I explain the detail on our relationship to Mae. She's very supportive and gives us her blessing. I couldn't be happier with all of this.

Mae also gives Charlotte a ring, which she happily wears on her index finger. Mae says it's a family tradition and hopes to give more as a dowry someday.

Charlotte and I can't stop blushing at Mae's words.

"Mae! That's still a long way off... don't scare Charlotte," I protest.

Mae just laughs. "It's a prayer, P'Fa. Don't you want that in the future? I already want a daughter-in-law, and it has to be this girl," she teases.

I want to protest, but Charlotte interrupts me.

"Thank you, Mae. Of course. Hopefully," she says, kissing my mom's cheek.

My mom smiles at that.

I feel warm with Charlotte's response. Could I really get to that point with her? My mom's prayer is very strong, because maybe I'm praying for the same thing too. Hopefully.
