"Thank you, for picking me up." Meredith smiled as she walked out of the hospital.
"What are boyfriends for?" Finn asked as her pager rang. She looked down at her waistband and felt her blood run cold. Code blue, in his room. She dropped her purse and ran back into the building, running up the stairs. Finn was running behind her but she didn't notice. She got to his floor and burst through the door at the crowd of people around the room.
She saw him laying in bed, cooling packs over his body. The gown was unbuttoned on his chest, and she looked around for a moment as tears instantly flowed from her eyes.
"Why aren't you doing anything?" She asked, looking at Richard.
"He signed a DNR, Meredith." He spoke softly and she shook her head. She laid the bed stand down and leaned over him, her hands giving chest compressions till he felt arms wrap around her waist. It was Finn and she kicked and cried as he pulled her off Derek's body.
"You don't know him!" She cried, breaking out of Finn's grip, "He doesn't want to die!"
"Meredith stop it," Richard said as she continued chest compressions.
"You were supposed to fix him." She turned to Dr. Wyatt, "Not make him kill himself."She bent down and blew air into his lungs, connecting their lips for a moment. He didn't wake up and the monitor was still flatlining. She shook her head and gave him another breath before continuing her chest compressions. Finn grabbed her again, holding her back as she cried, shaking her head.
"He's been down for 10 minutes." Richard said quietly.
"I never told him..." She let out breathlessly, "He promised he wouldn't die.""Let me go!" She screamed, as he lifted her off the floor. She reached out and slammed her hand against Derek's chest but it didn't do anything. The flatline still sounded and she sunk to the floor, sobbing in the room. Finn let go and stepped back before they all heard a sound on the monitor. She looked up and saw his heart beat. Another noise. And another till he got back to his resting heart rate. His eyes opened, and he took a deep breath, and she was with him, holding his hand and gripping it.
"Hey..." He said weakly, making her cry even harder. She pulled the headrest up and she gently rested her forehead against his. Everyone looked at each other for a few moments, and a few people left the room. She was lost in his eyes and she couldn't stop smiling through her tears. Everyone had left the room now, closing the door behind them as she held his cheek in her hand and she kissed his forehead, unable to convey how much it hurt.
"Water." His voice was weak and she nodded, grabbing a bottle from his bedside and letting him sip out of the straw. She tucked his hair behind his ear and she shook her head as she put the water down.
"Please destroy your DNR." She whispered. He nodded simply. She changed everything. She leaned forewards and rested her lips on his cheek.
"Okay." He couldn't even say no as she walked around the bed and he moved over. She laid beside him and he fell back asleep, the fever coming down. She placed her hand over his chest. She didn't know exactly what had came over her, but she knew that the thought of loosing him sent her body into a state of shock.
"You promised me you wouldn't die." She whispered, "So don't."
She kissed his forehead and her fingers ran over the small hairs over his chest that were growing back.
"I won't. I'll hang on." He mumbled, "For you, I'll hang on."
"Thank you, Derek." She whispered, moving to get up.
"No. Don't get up." He whispered, "Just stay for a minute."
"Relax." She laughed, "I'm just locking the door."He laughed weakly and watched her walk to the car before locking it. She came back and laid next to him. He looked down and she looked up, their eyes fixated on each other. He leaned down and winced a little bit before moving his head back. He couldn't even lean down to kiss her.
