"Do you always do this with girls?" She slurred, "Get them drunk and take them back home?" He laughed and shook his head as he grabbed her hip. He tugged her closer and kissed her deeply. She moaned into his mouth and wrapped her arms around his neck. He pressed her body against the door and they pulled away gently, both of their lips red and a little swollen. He chuckled quietly before smiling, "You would be the first in a very long time."

He felt a chill as he heard machines deep. He knew he was in a coma. He knew it, he'd felt this before and he was so angry, so frustrated. He was freezing, and tried to open his eyes. He was weak and he couldn't think anymore.

"Meredith Grey?" Richard came out of his office to the group of interns on the catwalk, "Can I speak to you for a moment?"

They all looked at her and she nodded awkwardly before following him into his office. He urged her to sit and she did as she bit her lip nervously.

"I know you care about Dr. Shepherd." Richard said softly... "Bear with me, this isn't a topic I can talk lightly about."

"Okay." She nodded, and waited patiently as he sighed.

"He has been a student of mine... for quite a while now." He said, "And I have watched him grown into a man, a man that I am proud to call my son. A subject in which I have poured all of my talent into."

She nodded, following what he was saying. He and Derek had history, a long history.

"The night you came in with him, in the ambulance. That night, he named you his emergency contact." Richard cleared his throat uncomfortably, "He told me that in matters surrounding his long term care, you were to have the final decision in his care."

She felt tears burning her eyes and she looked down, letting them drop into her lap.

"During his most recent surgery, his heart arrested, and did not beat for half an hour which nearly wiped his brain function." Richard said, "Due to his vegetative state, it is now in your hands to either move him to a long term facility, keep him here, or pull his life support."

"He's staying here." Meredith instantly answered.
"Meredith... you should take some time to think..." He started.
"He's staying." She answered again, fiercely.
"I don't have anyone to give him that kind of care."
"Then I will." She looked up, "I'll do anything he needs."
"He needs around-the-clock care, Meredith." Richard said.

"I'll come in before anyone and check on him, I'll use my breaks to check in on him. I'll stay late. He's not going to be a vegetable, Dr. Webber. He just won't." She whispered.

"He can stay 90 days." Richard said softly, "That's the most I can give you. 3 months."

"Okay." She nodded, getting up, and walking to the door.
"Dr. Grey... Thank you." He said, "For not giving up."

She nodded and gave him a small here before did a few mire hours of work before walking into his room. Her hand held his for a moment and the monitor started to beep faster.

"I've never had a boyfriend."
"Not even a high school, stupid boyfriend?" He asked softly.
"My mother was too strict for that." She smile awkwardly.
"Meredith." He capped the wine before placing it back.
"Yeah?" She looked up at him, his eyes boring into hers.

He leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. She took a deep breath in, and he held his cheek with his large hand. She smiled as her hands undid his buttons. He pulled away again and she smiled as he laid her down on his blanket.

"Derek." She gasped softly and he smiled. He was on top of her, holding himself above her. She smiled wide and leaned up, kissing him deeply. She pushed off his coat and unbuttoned his shirt before unbuckling his belt. His hands had taken off her pants and her sweater before she could even get a chance to do it herself.

"Back pocket." He moaned as he sucked sweetly on her collarbone. She grinned and ran her fingers through his hair with one hand and reached down past his back to his jeans. She reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small packet before giving him a small squeeze.

They laughed and he turned her around, letting her sit above him as he kicked off his pants. She unclipped her bra and he dragged it off her skin with his teeth. She gently stroked him and he moaned as his hands covered her chest, his teeth nipping and his tongue lapping against her skin. He felt her slide the plastic on and he didn't waste a second. Grabbing her hips, he let her sit on him and they both moaned again.

"Oh my god, Derek." She gripped his shoulders as he buried his mouth in her cleavage, not taking his attention off of her. She couldn't help but move on top of him, and shivered as cold air hit her back. She bent down and kissed him and she didn't think he had noticed how cold she was but he grabbed his shirt, pulling it over her shoulders and she grinned. Putting her hands through the sleeves, she let him turn her around. He cupped her face and smiled genuinely and instantly she was nervous.

"I..." He trailed but instead he kissed her passionately, while he thrusted, and her lungs were out of breath. A few minutes later, they were both panting heavily, their bodies tangling and she kissed him deeply and she bit his lip as they finished. His eyes opened, looking for something to hold onto and he expected hers to be closed but they were open too. He found solace in her eyes and felt his entire body trembling at her presence. He'd never felt this way before, so unrestrained, so free.

They rolled around and he pulled the edge of the blanket over them. His arms wrapped around her and she tucked herself into his chest as he protected her from the cold.

"I can be your high school boyfriend." He breathed into her ear, making her smile, "I can climb through windows and take you to parties, or hold a radio over my head outside your window."

"I like how we are right now." She whispered and he nodded, holding her tighter to him. She kissed his chest and he nodded, "Me too."

A few hours later, he sat with his back against the top of the stairs and she was curled into his arms, the blanket covering her. Her gentle snores kept him awake but he would rather be awake. He stroked her hair gently and watched as the sky turned purple. He couldn't explain how he was feeling. More serious than he'd ever felt about anything.

"Did you mean it?" She murmured softly into his ear.
"Hm?" He'd been caught in thinking that he barely heard her.
"Including me? Did you mean it? You're serious?" She asked.
"Yes." He smiled, "Yes, I'm serious."

She leaned up and kissed him, and their eyes locked for a long time. He imagined his life with her, seeing it through her eyes too. She started to fall that night, imagining her life with him, the moving in, the marriage, and the kids, and the pets. She wasn't afraid because that's where they were headed.

He smiled and she grinned before they looked out over the water. The first ferry boat rides were starting and she rested her head on his chest again. The soothing sound of his heart was all she needed.
_______

One Month Later

He was still in the hospital bed and she walked in after her shift. She was exhausted but she gently sat by his feet. She pulled the sheets up and gently took off his socks. His feet were warm and she ran a wipe up his legs, cleaning him and she shaved the beard that she had let grow. She cut his hair and talked about her day before eating dinner with him.

"We need to talk, Meredith." Richard said, coming in.
"It's been 30 days." She said, "I still have time."
"Meredith, he's alive. He knows you're here." He said.
"What are you..." She trailed as Richard walked to her.

"When you're not here, his heart rate is 40, barely adequate." He said quietly. "When you walk in the room, his heart rate jumps to 50. When you speak, it goes to 60, and when you touch Meredith, when you hold his hand, it gets up to 80."

"So... what?" She asked, "It always goes back down.
"Stay with him tonight, stay in his bed tonight." Richard said.
"I..." She trailed.

"Save his life, Meredith. A steady heart rate of 80 can wake him up." Richard said, "No one is going to come into this room tonight."

She finished eating and gently turned off the light before placing her hand on his. She realized that his heart did beat a little bit faster. She got into his bed, placing a hand over his heart and faster than she could even believe, she fell asleep.
