Romeo opened his eyes his body numb and aching. He was lay on the cold floor in his room which was now completely pitch black except for the dim streak of moonlight filtering through his window. Heaving himself up off the floor Romeo groaned in pain wincing at every step he took. His phone lay beside him on the floor with cracks littering the previously immaculate screen.
Seeing his shattered phone reminded him of the shattered relationship with Gabriel, the boy he'd given everything up to love. The first boy he'd ever loved and could ever love, yet he'd thrown him away just to protect himself. He needed to fix that.
Not even thinking twice Romeo began to impulsively pack a duffle bag, he threw all his items of value into it, his phone, charger, headphones, blade, concealer. Then he began shoving clothes into the bag basically emptying his closet. Lastly he crept downstairs lugging the now heavy bag with him. He quickly headed into the kitchen where his Mom's purse was, he fished through it deftly, snatching $100 worth of cash before glancing around the room one last time.
Romeo couldn't say he'd miss this place, not in the slightest. Yet it still felt very weird leaving it all behind, and without any prior planning either. He now just needed to get out of the state and to Gabriel's house. He could explain everything to the brunette once he got there, that'd be easier than trying to talk about it all over a crackly phone line when Gabriel probably wasn't even awake at that moment.
Slipping quietly out of the house Romeo jogged lightly down the street until he hit the main road, despite it being so late at night cars were still whizzing by. Standing at the edge of the road Romeo took a breath then held out his hand. Lots of cars predictably passed him by but eventually a small, red pick up truck slowed to a halt beside him. Romeo approached the window eagerly resting his arms onto the truck door.
"Where you headed tonight?" The man who was sat in the drivers seat asked raising his eyebrows. He had dark red hair, a moustache and was incredibly jacked. Romeo sighed before replying.
"Take me here" He requested holding his phone out. He didn't care if the man took it and drove off at this point, he was so tired he just wanted to get to Gabriel's house.
"Sure thing mate, that's quite a way away but I'm going that way anyway, do they know you're coming?" The man asked as Romeo hopped into the back of the truck.
"No. It's a bit... spur of the moment" Romeo explained setting his bag down on the seat beside him, the man smiled slightly nodding his head.
"I'm Scott, you are?" He introduced himself pulling out of the layby and back onto the busy road.
"Romeo" Romeo replied shortly, he didn't really want a conversation but at the same time this man was doing him a massive favour here, giving him a free ride miles away from where they were.
"Age? You look a bit young to be out this late at night by yourself" Scott commented speeding up as he entered the highway.
"16. Things happened" Romeo answered quietly, if they were going to talk the topic of conversation couldn't be his life. That was the last thing he needed to discuss with a stranger right now.
"So your parents don't even know where you are? Imagine how worried they must be, you didn't tell them anything?" Scott queried. His questions were becoming annoying now.
"No one knows I'm here or that I'm leaving" Romeo told him gruffly. The truck jolted over a speed bump as Scott nodded knowingly.
The ride became an uncomfortable silence as the dark streets passed them by, eventually Romeo began seeing road signs for Gabriel's state but the man seemed to be taking different exits. After the fourth or so time this had happened Romeo was beginning to become increasingly frustrated. "We're going the wrong way" He pointed out crossly.
"Mhm" Scott answered his voice deeper than it had been before, sending chills down Romeo's spine.
"You're kidding me, right?" Romeo whispered.
"I didn't say anything!" Scott protested amusement lacing his sinisterly strung sentence.
"Let me out! Right now I swear to god" Romeo ordered roughly. He could see where this was going already.
"Sure thing buddy, I'll stop right here" Scott answered slowing the car to a halt on the side of the highway. He then got out as Romeo tried his own door, it was locked. Smirking Scott opened it from the outside lunging inside and gripping onto Romeo harshly.
Romeo wriggled and yelled in the muscly mans grasp but it wasn't any use, he tried biting down on his wrist but all that achieved was a slap to the face. He tried kicking out but Scott just restrained his legs. Soon his hands and ankles were duct taped and a strip of the sticky gray tape was placed over his mouth. Romeo could feel sweat slipping down his face as the car started up again.
"You sick fuck!" Romeo tried to hiss but his words were muffled and inaudible due to the duct tape on his lips.
"What's that? Speak up buddy" Scott cooed from the front seat with a dark chuckle. "Talk carefully, you'll soon be choking out your last words. Some of them beg for mercy, some of them go out with an insult. I like those ones best, but either way works. Thinking about the fact they've spent their whole pathetic lives not even knowing me, yet I'm the last thing they see, last thing they feel, smell, touch. The last voice they hear, the thing that scares them most. Their last words are my own little secret" Scott explained his voice uneven and filled with malice.
This man was crazy. "Your the oldest so far, the youngest was 12, she was a sweet little kid. Came into the truck no questions asked. Cried for mercy as I strangled her. Then the oldest before you was this boy, I think his name was Jeremy, or Jeffery. Something like that, he was 15. Went out fighting" Scott reminisced chuckling like what he was saying was funny, he really was a sick fuck. Romeo was about to become his latest victim.
Romeo tried to muffle out some words of warning but was drowned out by Scott's deranged laughter. His words muffled by the tune of foreboding.
"Your a feisty one aren't you. I can have fun with you" Scott snarled between sinister snickers from the front. Romeo was wriggling about using all the strength he could muster to rip the duct tape with with no success. If he hadn't just been beaten up so badly mere hours before maybe he'd have stood a better chance. Not now though, it was over now.
