October 7th

Charlie was awakened solely by his intuition. His phone battery was completely dead, and the alarm didn't go off. It was quite cool in the morning, and the dogs, sleeping on their sides next to the guy, pressed closer. When Charlie came to his senses, there was half an hour left before classes. The guy hastily fed the dogs canned food and, jumping on his bicycle, quickly dashed towards the school. The hunger, which had become much stronger overnight, gnawed at the walls of his stomach, pushing the guy to skip the damn classes and turn to eat at the local diner. He was only stopped by the thought that anywhere in Amber Hill he could accidentally run into his parents, and then all plans would be over.

Having reached the school, Charlie parked his bike in the lot. Good thing his parents didn't show up at the school gates. He definitely couldn't have handled that shame. With ten minutes to spare before the bell, he waited in the hall, choosing a secluded spot near a column. Among the flashing faces of familiar and unfamiliar students, Evan was nowhere to be seen. Of course, a top student like Holden come to school half an hour or even an hour early to review his perfectly memorized lessons. For some reason, Charlie couldn't shake the thought that Evan did just that. He studied everything perfectly, never was late, and never got any comments about his studies. Besides the girls who were crazy about his handsome appearance, the teachers probably adored him too. Except for the history teacher and the coach. The coach Nash only respected those who loved sports, and Mr. Coleman, the history teacher, didn't like anyone. Not even his own subject

A minute before the bell rang, when Charlie decided that Evan had indeed arrived earlier and was already in the classroom, he saw his tall figure in a red jacket. That color, which stood out sharply from the gray crowd against the gloomy morning sky, was impossible not to notice. Scarlet, almost bloody, in which Evan inadvertently attracted the attention of the schoolyard. Charlie nervously bit his lip, realizing that he was also staring greedily and... waiting for Evan to come closer. He was waiting for this moment.

Evan entered the school building, giving a few girls a quite pleasant smile. Not the kind of smile that's usually used to flirt and arouse interest. Rather, it was a polite formality. Yes, Holden was definitely from that caste of people who are polite to everyone equally, without singling anyone out. Which meant that his conversation yesterday could have been routine for him. Literally anyone could have been in Charlie's place. And thinking about it was unpleasant.

When only a few feet separated them, Charlie didn't take his intense gaze off Evan. Evan held his gaze on Charlie for a split second and passed by, seemingly without even noticing the guy. Wright froze, not blinking for a couple of moments. He didn't immediately realize that he had forgotten to breathe. And that the blood inside him turned disgustingly cold. Charlie could have easily asked for a greeting, thrown something sarcastic, refreshed his memory with some bright antics. But he was unable to even open his mouth.

Holden just passed by. Didn't pay attention. Didn't see. It raised a toxic cloud of foul disappointment from within.

The bell rang, deafening the guy. Charlie, pulling hood over his head, trudged towards their classroom. Evan had already sat in the center next to some particularly active girl and chatting with her. Exactly. Everyone's darling. And zero attention to Wright. Maybe he just didn't notice? To hell with it. The desire openly show to him completely disappeared. Plopping down at one of the back desks, Charlie turned away towards the window.

The first lesson felt like it lasted a hundred years. Hunger worsened his mood. He wanted to smoke. Charlie thought resentfully about the cigarettes in his backpack and about how he should have skipped class and gone to eat. Thoughts jumped from one to another with such speed that Wright barely understood what was happening to him. And he tried not to look at anyone at all, not to cross glances, just to physically disappear. Barely sitting until the bell rang to end the class, Charlie ran out of the classroom first. Need to smoke. Urgently.
