The attacks of monsters have become the norm in this society. However, the way it happened today was very unusual.

Monster attacks were usually isolated incidents. Although monsters don't usually try atagonizing each other, they don't get along well either.

It's a very rare occurence for monsters to work together. That is what's making this particular incident so strange.

This mass attack can not be called ramdom either. After all, all of those monsters came from the same origin.

The monsters have risen from the sea, their goal to sow discord on land. All of them were appropiatly themed as well.

On a certain street a monster the size of the building caused destruction by walking alone, casing the humans in the vicinity to run away screeming. Although perhaps it's looks had something to do with it.

Beyond it's massive size, this creature was similar to an octopus. Although it had an muscular humanoid body, drabbed in a white robe you'd see in a description of greek myths.

It's head was exactly like an octopus, with an vertical mouth of razor sharp teeths and tentacles sticking out and moving constantly. Although it had a very large number of eyes.

It's hands had sharp nails, more like talons, ilthe fingers stuck together by a layer of skin. There were also noticeable gills along it's abdomen.

Octopus Monster:Unless you all want to die, listen up! We are the messangers from the deep sea! Humans! Surrender Earth to the Clan of the Sea Folk! And then serve as food for...

The creature had much gusto in his speech. However, it never managed to finish it.

Oversized screws the size of pillars burst out of the ground under the octopus creature, shredding it to bits. As the pueces fell apart Kumagawa can be seen with Kohina riding on his back, none of the blood having touched either of them.

With the threat taken care of, the people cheered. You'd expect the saviors to be happy with such an accomplishment.

Yet, that was not the case. Kumagawa let out a deep sigh while Kohina pouted.

With a huff, Kumagawa took his phone out of his pocket. He dialed the number and waited for an answer.

Genos:Sensei?

Kumagawa:[Genos-chan, prepare the grill.]

Genos:The grill? Very well...How was your outing?

Kumagawa:[...Dissapointing.]

Kohina:Ctchullu didn't rise!

Returning home, Kumagawa kicked his shoes away and feel back on the couch with Kohina in his lap. As he did so, Genos took the octopus remains they brought home and started grilling.

Genos:You sure had a full day, Sensei...But it seems that neither you nor Kohina-sama have risen in rank ever since the meteor incident.

Kumagawa:[Well, that was to be expected.]

Kohina:We had taken of a lot of sea life monsters. Haven't we, papa?

Kumagawa:[Yes, but the meteor thing was a rare incident. Such small incidents with monsters wouldn't be enough for a change in rank.]

Genos:Rising in the ranks of the Hero Association isn't a simple thing. There are a lot of factors going on. Especially the Class B hero Rank 1. That hero...

Genos was going to continue retelling the rumours he heard. However, he was stopped by the ringing of his phone.

Genos:Pardon me.

Genos went to pick up his phone, it was a call from the Hero Association. He listened carefully to the informations relayed to him.

Genos:I see...I'll ask him. Sensei, did you say the last monster you killed said something about being an member of the Clan of the Sea Folk?

Kumagawa:[Hm? The eldricht reject? Yeah, he said something about that.]

Genos:Seems like hus clan members are wrecking havoc in City J. An Class A hero is having trouble with them. And from what I was told, he's at his rope's end.

Kohina:Eh? An takeover?

Kumagawa:[Had Triton got tired of pollution?]

Genos:Sensei? Who's Triton?

Kumagawa:[It's a pop culture reference...You really are a countryside boy to your core, aren't you?]

Genos:Huh? Well, yes. But what does that have to do with anything?

Kumagawa:[Never mind.]

Kohina:So they called Genos about this?

Genos:Yes. They also asked for me to request your help as well, because they saw I am rather close with you two.

Kumagawa:[I see...Well, let's earn our paychecks.]

Not a very heroic thing to say. However, that was just the kind of person he is.

Genos adores his teacher. However, he was not blind to what kind of person Kumagawa is, the smiling man never attempting to hide it from him.

From a psichological profile, Kumagawa must be an psychopath. However, that was not necessarly something bad.

Genos actually researched about it. Movies and media seemed to characterize psychopaths as these evil masterminds with no care for other people, but that wasn't really it.

Rather, from what he gathered, psychopaths are people that have muted feelings and act in a logical way that benefit them because of it. But most psychopaths can still lead relatively normal lives.

Kumagawa might act in selfish ways and be cold and calculative, bu he has shown genuine affection and care towards Kohina and eben Genos himself to an extent. So he was certainly able to make emotional connections.

Perhaps that is why Kumagawa let's himself be hit in a fight. Beyond his invulnerability provided by all fiction, he perhaps needs that adrenaline high to feel strong emotions.

Of course, Kumagawa presented a lot of bad traits as a person. But he was still undeniably an working member of society.

That didn't make Genos think lesser of his teacher. In fact, he come to respect him even more.

It was easy for any hardworking fool taht wore his heart on their sleeve to work hard for others. But he found it much more impressive that Kumagawa actively choose to work hard for others, despise being an lazy and selfish person.

Kumagawa:[Genos-chan, what are you waiting for? Come on, let's go fishing.]

Genos:Yes, Sensei!

This incident with the Clan of the Sea Folk didn't reach only the ears of the big classes. Several Class C heroes have heard of it and hoarded a car, thinking they can use this oportunity to boost their reputation and climb the ranks.

However, when so many people get together in a single car, some of them wearing heavy armor, the speed of the vehicle is greatly reduced. That point was further proved when Kumagawa and Genos run by them, passing by with ease.

Granted, the two ran with speed that a car couldn't reach. From Kumagawa's back, Kohina shouted at the Class C heroes.

Kohina:You guys know you can take a bus rather than hoard a small car, right!?
