Clarissa CooperWHAT MAKES A PLACE FEEL LIKE HOME?
Is it warmth and familiarity? Some idealized, make-believe version of the American Dream? Is it love and acceptance? Or is it simple safety?
Or it's none of those things. And it's a place where the captain of the football team is murdered.
Or a place where everyone in your house is so sickly sweet you feel like you're choking?
I told my friends in the student lounge how my mom and dad didn't want to involve the police,
"They don't want anyone to know she ran away, or about her shameful condition," I added.
Veronica scoffed, "Please. What decade is this?"
"Also, since she knew where Jason's getaway car was, they're afraid people might think she burned it and that if she did..." I started and Jughead interjected.
"She could be the murderer, trying to cover her tracks," he finished.
Archie, puzzled, asked, "Who did burn the car, then?"
"Sheriff Keller says it's possible someone was following us," I replied.
"Oh, my God. Honestly, guys, we should just move," Veronica suggested.
"What if Polly's really hurt?" I worried aloud. "What if whoever killed Jason is coming after her next?" Jughead comforted me by wrapping his arm around my shoulder and holding my hand.
"Clary, even though your parents don't want to, maybe you should go to the police," Archie suggested.
"I second that. We can talk to my dad together about how he has to be discreet," Kevin chimed in.
"No offense, Kev, but your dad answers to a higher authority than God—the Blossoms," Jughead added. "They're the first people he would tell."
"And if there's anyone to keep this a secret from, it's the Blossoms. They'd twist it around and go after Polly out of spite," I reasoned.
"How can we help? Tell us, C, and we'll do it," Veronica offered.
I was at my locker, retrieving my books, when I overheard Archie and Jughead talking as they passed by.
"Is that because you and Clary..." Archie trailed off.
"We may have had a moment," Jughead admitted.
"It's totally cool, I get it. No worries, I'm just curious," Archie responded, their voices fading as they moved away.
Before I could dwell on their conversation, Veronica approached, keen to discuss the same topic.
"Did I just witness Riverdale High's very own Holden Caulfield putting his arm around you?" Veronica asked with a grin.
I closed my locker with a laugh. "Okay, these past few days haven't been easy emotionally. Jughead has been really supportive..."
