"THAT WAS THE LAST DAY YOU SAW HIM?" SHERIFF KELLER ASKED,

his tone gentle as he looked at Polly, who nodded solemnly.

"At Pop's, when he told me the plan, that he was gonna fake his own death, and then we would meet up. But, before that could happen, my mom and dad sent me away."

"One of Jason's teammates said that before he ran away, Jason was dealing drugs,"I interjected cautiously.

"Making a one-time delivery. He needed... We needed money. To get away and to start over," Polly explained, her voice strained with emotion.

"So Riverdale's star football player becomes a drug mule?" Sheriff Keller asked, his brow furrowed.

"He went to a bar on the other side of the tracks and made a deal with some biker gang," Polly continued.

"The Serpents?" Sheriff Keller's eyes narrowed, and I shot him a quick look, urging caution.

"He got an address upstate, where he was supposed to deliver the drugs in exchange for cash. The drugs you found in Jason's car... that went up in flames. Along with everything I had left of Jason, including the ring his nana gave me, which he was keeping until..." Polly's voice cracked, tears welling up. Veronica and Betty moved closer, offering silent support.

"Okay, Sheriff, I think that's enough for tonight. I think Polly needs her rest," Hermione Lodge interjected, standing up alongside me to show Sheriff Keller out. "I'll be in touch, ladies."

"I'll show you out," Hermione added politely to Sheriff Keller, who nodded solemnly.

"We're gonna get you through this, okay?" I heard Betty say softly to Polly, her voice filled with empathy.

"Sheriff Keller told us everything," Mom said tersely as she closed the door to an empty classroom. Betty and Veronica sat at desks, while I leaned casually against the window.

"How you're hiding Polly at the Pembrooke?" Mom's voice was accusatory.

"Better than in an insane asylum," I shot back sharply.

"Actually, Mrs. Cooper, that's on me. I was the one who suggested that Polly stay with us," Veronica intervened calmly.

"She's trying to help. Unlike you and Dad, who want Polly to give the baby up for adoption," Betty added firmly.

"Betty, it's what's best for Polly and the baby," Mom retorted, her tone defensive.

"Mom, that's not your choice. Your choice is whether or not you want to be a part of Polly's life," I asserted, taking a stride forward.

"Veronica and her mom have offered to host a baby shower," Betty continued, trying to shift the tense atmosphere.

"Well, that is hardly appropriate!" Mom's voice rose in disapproval.
