"THIS IS AWESOME. MOVING ROCKS BEATS WORKING OUT IN OUR CRAPPY

weight room," Moose exclaimed as we gathered around a wheelbarrow, heaving rocks into it.

"Hey, Keller! Looking good, looking buff. We should get you on the team," one of the football nerds joked, trying to lighten the mood.

"I prefer my contact sports one-on-one, you know, like... Boxing," Kevin retorted, clearly not in the mood for banter, and walked off.

"Pretty handy with that wheelbarrow, Archie," I teased, glancing at Archie who was sweating from the exertion. "You know, if the whole music thing doesn't pan out, you can always have manual labor as a fallback."

"Don't even joke. I did this all summer long, remember? My dad loves this kind of work. And I love him, but..." Archie trailed off, a touch of uncertainty in his voice.

"No, I know. Your dad's path is not for you. Trust me, I get it," I reassured him.

"He works his ass off for me, bro, but never asks for anything. Always has my back, even when I mess up. So if having his back means I gotta haul some rocks, then bring it on," Archie declared, his determination shining through.

"Agreed. Your dad's got my back, too. More than some people," I added, understanding the sentiment completely.

"Exactly. Speaking of one of those people," Archie nodded toward the entrance where Clary was setting out lunch orders from Pop's.

I approached Clary cautiously, noticing the serious expression on her face. "You have 'Alice face'," I remarked as I grabbed my burger.

"I feel like I always do as of late," Clary replied, handing me her milkshake out of habit.

"I feel like favorites are being played here," Moose chimed in, lightening the atmosphere.

"They are," Clary affirmed, then quickly kissed me on the cheek. I wrapped my arms around her, ignoring her grimace. "You're sweaty," she pointed out.

"You'll have to deal with it," I said smugly, earning an eye roll from Clary.

After we finished eating, Clary sent us all back to work. By the end of the day, we gathered in the trailer where Mr. Andrews thanked us.

"Hey, guys, you were a lifesaver today. I appreciate it," Fred acknowledged gratefully.

"Hard hats go in the bin, and there's sodas in the fridge," Clary announced, her voice efficient and authoritative. She'd been working for Archie's dad since middle school, and it showed.

"Crap! Hey, guys, I forgot my phone," Moose exclaimed suddenly and dashed out. Shortly after, we heard a loud bang and the sound of electrical sparking. Clary and Kevin rushed out, and we followed.
