"WE CAN'T LET POLLY RUN AWAY" BETTY ASSERTED TO THE GROUP

"But if she can't stay at home, then... I don't know, maybe I can rent her an apartment."

"Let me talk to my mom," Veronica offered.

"No, you have your own stuff to deal with right now, V," Clary interjected, sitting beside me at the end of the couch, her legs draped over mine while my arm rested behind her.

"Clary, Polly needs doctors, prenatal vitamins..." Veronica pressed.

"She needs her family," Cheryl Blossom interjected as she walked in.

"What do you want, Cheryl?" Betty questioned, while Clary leaned into my arm, absentmindedly playing with strands of hair poking out from my hat.

"We both want the baby to be safe. How can I help?" Cheryl replied.

"We don't trust you, Cheryl," Betty retorted, and Clary amended her friend's statement, "I do. It's Mama Blossom I don't trust."

"So don't trust me. Watch me like a hawk. Tell me the bare minimum. But let me help you help Polly," Cheryl suggested.

"You think Polly's crazy. You and Clary do," Betty accused, and Clary glanced up at our friends.

"I do. I think she's crazier than a serial killer on bath salts," Clary admitted, then gestured towards Cheryl to complete her thought, "but so what? She's carrying Jason's baby. That changes everything. Do you know where she is?"

"If I did, I wouldn't tell you," Betty replied.

"Oh, my God, you do," Cheryl grinned, taking a seat next to me on the couch and shooting me a dirty look.

"What? No," Betty stammered.

"Wow, you are literally the worst liar I've ever encountered. Spare me the details, Betty. Just tell me how I can assist my darling nephew or niece," Cheryl insisted.

"Okay, uh, Polly needs money for a safe place to live and for medical expenses," Betty listed.

"Cash? Is that all? I can talk to my mom and dad," Cheryl offered.

"What? No, Cheryl," Clary interjected firmly.

"Jason's baby changes things. We're all on the same team now," Cheryl declared.

Archie and I lounged in his dad's work trailer, waiting for our fathers to finish their construction job. They returned, deep in talk.

"How was your first day back?" I asked my dad.

"Great," he replied, and Fred clapped him on the back. "Your dad's the hardest-working guy on the crew, as always."

"In that case, why don't we celebrate to mark the occasion?" I suggested.
