Jughead Jones
"I DIDN'T TELL YOU AHEAD OF TIME BECAUSE I KNEW YOU WOULD HAVE TRIED
to stop me," I admitted, sitting on the hood of Clary's car while Archie and Veronica talked a few feet away.
"Damn straight. And I'm still gonna try," Clary replied, her tone tinged with frustration as she stood in front of me.
"Clary, the Southside is where the powers that be want me. Maybe I want to be here as well. I might blend in better here. And it could keep you safe," I explained earnestly, hoping she would understand my perspective.
"I'm not letting Riverdale's civil war split us apart, Jug," she asserted firmly, stepping in between my legs and wrapping her arms around me.
Clary's phone suddenly dinged, breaking the moment of quiet understanding. She glanced at it, then her expression turned to one of shock. "Thanks for trying. I'm going to be with Jason now," she read aloud, her voice trembling with realization.
"Oh, my God," I murmured, concern flooding me. "Where would Cheryl go to be with Jason?"
"Sweetwater River. We have to go!" Clary exclaimed, immediately turning to Archie and Veronica who were still engaged in conversation nearby.
"Guys, we have to go!" I called out urgently, already moving to open the driver's door of Clary's car. The gravity of the situation was clear—we needed to act fast to prevent any harm from coming to Cheryl.
I've never seen Clary drive so fast through the snow. We plowed our way through the thick layer of snow covering Sweetwater River.
"Cheryl?" Each of us called out, desperation in our voices, as we trudged through the snow, hands interlocked for support.
"She's not here," Clary sobbed, her voice breaking as I held onto her shoulder for comfort.
"Over there!" Veronica's cry broke through the cold air, and we halted just short of the frozen riverbank.
"Oh, my God. She's over there!" Clary shrieked, pointing frantically at her twin sister, who was attempting to break through the ice.
"Cheryl!" The three of them yelled simultaneously.
"Cheryl, stop!" I shouted, my heart racing with fear. "What are you doing?"
We cautiously stepped onto the ice, but it started to crack under our weight.
"Wait, wait! Jug, the ice," Archie pulled me back urgently.
"He's right. Too much weight, and we'll all go under," I warned, my voice strained with worry.
"Cheryl! Cheryl, please," Clary pleaded desperately. "Just come back to the shore, and we'll figure this out together, okay?"
Cheryl hesitated, her eyes filled with anguish, wearing the same outfit she had worn the last time she saw Jason. Tears had frozen on her face.
Then, suddenly, the ice gave way beneath Cheryl.
"No!" Clary screamed, racing out onto the cracking ice.
"Cheryl!" We all shouted, sprinting after Clary.
"The current's got her," Clary cried, staring into the hole where Cheryl had disappeared.
"Spread out, spread out!" I directed, and we frantically began clearing away snow.
"Here! Over here!" Archie yelled, his voice strained with effort as he pounded on the ice.
"Archie, be careful!" Veronica cautioned, her voice laced with concern.
"Someone help!" Veronica cried out, her desperation echoing through the frozen landscape. Clary gasped suddenly, as if she had seen something terrible.
"Cheryl, swim!" Clary grabbed a rock and began pounding on the ice alongside Archie, blood staining the surface as they worked tirelessly to rescue her "get away from her!" Clary shouted in a hysteria.
Finally, with a collective effort, Archie and Clary managed to pull Cheryl from the frigid water. Archie immediately began CPR while Clary held her sister's hand, tears streaming down her face.
And then, miraculously, Cheryl coughed up water, her body trembling with the shock of the cold. Clary let out a choked laugh, a mix of relief and sorrow, as she helped Archie lift Cheryl from the ice.
