Author's POV
As Jeanne and Shawn stepped into the next room, the atmosphere shifted, becoming more intimate and mysterious. The walls were lined with old bookshelves, filled with dusty tomes that looked like they hadn’t been touched in centuries. In the center of the room was an ornate table with a chessboard set up, but the pieces were scattered, as if mid-game.
Jeanne glanced around, taking in the scene, while Shawn stayed close, his hand still lingering on hers from their last room’s moment.
"This place feels like it’s holding secrets," Jeanne whispered, her voice barely audible.Shawn nodded, his gaze scanning the room. "And we’re here to uncover them," he said, his tone determined.
They moved towards the chessboard, and as they did, a soft click echoed through the room. The door behind them shut with a quiet finality, and the temperature dropped just a little, making Jeanne shiver.Without thinking, Shawn pulled her closer, his arm wrapping around her shoulders protectively.
"Look at this," Jeanne said, pointing at the chessboard.
"It’s like someone left it mid-game… but why?"
Shawn examined the pieces, his mind working quickly."Maybe this is the next puzzle. We need to figure out the correct move to unlock the next clue."
Jeanne bit her lip, thinking hard.
"It could be, but there are so many possibilities. We need to be careful. Remember, we only have so many chances before we’re locked in."Shawn’s grip on her shoulder tightened briefly, a silent reassurance that they were in this together.
"We’ll figure it out. We always do."
They stood side by side, analyzing the board. Jeanne's eyes flicked from piece to piece, trying to see the pattern, while Shawn’s brow furrowed in concentration. After a few minutes of silence, Jeanne let out a soft gasp.
"Shawn, look at the knight," she said, pointing to the piece in question.
"It’s the only one that can make a move without putting the king in danger. What if that’s the answer?"Shawn’s eyes lit up. "You might be right. Let’s move it and see what happens."
With a deep breath, Jeanne reached out and carefully moved the knight. For a moment, nothing happened, and they exchanged nervous glances. But then, with a soft rumble, a hidden drawer in the table slid open, revealing a small, intricately carved key.
Jeanne grinned, her eyes shining with excitement.
"We did it!"
Shawn couldn’t help but smile back, his chest swelling with pride at how well they worked together.
"We make a pretty good team, don’t we?"
