A Brand New Day

June 1, 2010

Arin's alarm blared through the quiet dorm room, its shrill tone jolting her awake. It was 5 am. With a groan, she fumbled for her phone to silence the obnoxious noise. The world outside was still shrouded in darkness, a stark contrast to the bright lights that awaited her in the training room.

After a quick shower and a hastily eaten breakfast, Arin joined the other trainees in the dance studio.

The large room was already filled with the rhythmic thump of music. The instructor, a stern-looking woman with a dancer's physique, stood at the front, her gaze sweeping over the room.

The dance studio was a whirlwind of activity. Trainees in colorful practice clothes moved across the floor, their bodies mirroring the instructor's movements. Arin felt a wave of self-consciousness wash over her as she joined the back of the line.

The choreography was complex, a mix of sharp movements and fluid transitions. She struggled to keep up, her limbs feeling stiff and uncoordinated. Dance was already not her best craft and being handed a complex choreo on the first day reduced her spirits further.

Lunch break offered a welcome breather. Arin sat alone at a table, picking at her food. A cute girl with a bright smile approached her.

"Hi, I'm Park Chaeyoung. I wasn't here for the past few days due to personal reasons, so this is our first meeting!" the girl said, extending a hand.

Relief flooded Arin as she shook the girl's hand, "Hi, I'm Arin. Nice to meet you too."

Vocal training proved to be exemplary. Arin's voice was composed as she hit the high notes elegantly. The instructor, a stern woman with a keen ear, was quite charmed by the newbie.

But her newfound confidence soon washed away when Arin's rap class proved a bit of a challenge. She discovered she was surrounded by male trainees in the class.

The room was smaller, with soundproof walls and dimmed lights. The instructor, a tall, lean man with a deep voice, sat at a computer, his fingers dancing across the keyboard.

The class started with vocal warm-ups, focusing on breath control and articulation. Arin struggled to keep up with the rapid-fire exercises, her tongue tripping over the words due to her nervousness.

The instructor, sensing her difficulty, offered words of encouragement, suggesting she focus on rhythm and flow rather than speed.

As the class progressed, Arin was introduced to basic rap techniques: rhyming, storytelling, and delivery. She found herself drawn to the raw energy of the music, experimenting with different rhythms and cadences. It was a challenge, but it was also thrilling.

By the end of the day, Arin was exhausted, both physically and emotionally. The training was far more intense than she had imagined.

Yet, amidst the self-doubt, a spark of determination ignited within her. She wouldn't let this break her. She would fall and rise again, she would learn, she would improve, and she would achieve her dream.

She went through the memories of today and after analyzing, she understood that she was doing quite satisfactorily in her vocals but had to improve her dance and rap.

So she decided to take up the offer Hoseok had given her the last time they met. Looking up at the clock, she found out that the hour hand was on 8 and the minute hand had just struck 12. There was still an hour before curfew.

Taking her water bottle and phone, she hopped out of her bed and dorm and started walking down the hallways aimlessly.

She didn't know where to find him. She wouldn't bang open the door of the boys' dorm. That would be so embarrassing. So she let her feet take her to Hoseok and Yoongi's recording room.

Arin hesitated outside the door of the recording studio. She could hear the faint rhythm of a beat and Yoongi's low, measured voice. Taking a deep breath, she knocked softly. The music paused momentarily before Yoongi's gruff voice called out, "Come in."

With a mix of nervousness and determination, Arin pushed open the door. The room was dimly lit. Yoongi was seated in front of the computer, his eyes focused intently on the screen. Hoseok, on the other hand, was standing in front of a microphone with headphones on his head, his body moving rhythmically to the beat.

Upon seeing Arin stand at the door, Yoongi paused the music and Hoseok flashed her a bright smile. "Hey there, Arin!" Hoseok greeted her cheerfully. "Nice to see you here. What can I do for you?"

What can I do for you?"

"Hi Hoseok, umm...I wanted to take up your offer to help me with my dance. I figured that since there was an hour before curfew, I could practice a bit. But...if you're busy, then I can come later...or tomorrow," she says, pausing apprehensively.

"Oh, I see," He replied, then turning to Yoongi he asked, "Hyung, can I go? In the meanwhile, you can record your part of the song."

"Hmmpf go," Yoongi grunted and subtly rolled his eyes.

Hoseok turned to Arin and said, "Well c'mon now, let's find an empty practice room."

Hoseok clapped his hands together enthusiastically. "Let's get started! First, we need to loosen up." He began to demonstrate some basic stretching exercises, his body moving with effortless grace. "Follow me."

Arin tried to mimic his movements, her muscles already giving up. Despite the initial exhaustion, she was excited to learn from someone as talented and experienced as Hoseok.

"Ok, now we'll start with a song. Are you ready?" Arin nodded her head vigorously and enthusiastically. Hoseok chuckles and quietly mumbles under his breath, "Cute."

Hoseok did a few taps on his phone with his digits and a hip-hop song began playing. He began to break down the dance moves. He showed Arin the basic steps, explaining the rhythm and the flow. "It's all about feeling the music," he said, his body moving to the beat. "Don't be afraid to experiment and add your own style."

Arin tried to mimic his movements, her body feeling stiff and awkward. Hoseok laughed, offering her words of encouragement. "Let your body loose and flow with the rhythm. Feel the music and your body's call towards it. Let loose Arin, let loose."

Noticing another one of Arin's failed attempts, he chuckled and said, "Don't worry, it takes time. Just keep practicing."

And with that, the duo kept practicing until their moves blended and the curfew began.
