FINCH.
———

"Splotched'Star is making you have a duel, you know what that is? A fight." Pond'Ears circled me with a disheveled look on his face.

"What about Robin?" I asked.

"No, not Robin, just you." He shook his head, "so I'm just going to give you some pointers because once that moon comes up there's not much time."
He stood in front of me and huffed.

"The sun is already setting," I said while gesturing to the sky.

"Exactly." He sighed, "so just go for the face."

I wouldn't want to disappoint Robin by losing.

"So is this a whoever draws first blood or what?" I sat down and flexed my claws. My stomach was churning with anxiety.

"No, whoever gives up first." He stepped up close to my face and hissed. "Do not give up, do not even think about giving up, alright? Don't even let the fucking words form." I gulped.

"I won't give up," I assured him.

"Yeah, you can say that now. You're going up against a cat bigger than you, for sure, so just knock them down to your size." He puffed out his chest, "I don't care how scared you are."

"Knock them down to my size?" I raised my cat-brows in confusion.

"If you can't get to their face first, get their legs. Nobody really protects their legs if you think about it." He swatted at my arm which caused me to lose my footing and topple down onto my stomach. "Observe."

"No, I just wasn't on guard," I murmured.

"Yeah, they wouldn't be either. Y'know everyone thinks you'll die tonight, right?"

"Yes, I know." I rose back up to my paws and shook my fur out.

"I don't care how hard you think it gets, just don't give up. Unless you're about to die, do not give up." He scoffed, "scratch that, don't give up till you're dead."

"I assure you, I'm not dying." I looked around at the slightly yellow grass that blew in the wind. Snow was coming.

"Alright, we're doing a test run on these fighting skills you already have. No claws." He showed his paw to me and sheathed his claws before nodding. "We're starting now."

I stared at him blankly.

"You would've lost by now." Pond'Ears lunged forward and slapped me in the cheek with his paw. I grunted and attempted to bite his scruff but he ducked under me and kicked my front leg.
