FINCH
———I paced the den. What are me and Robin supposed to do? They told us not to leave, but all the commotion outside is driving me crazy. What if they're talking about us? I looked down at Robin fast asleep in a corner. We don't even have any of the soft green beds!
"What are you doing? Can't you just sit down?" Yarrow'Snare, a white she-cat, spun around and hissed at me. She was one of the guards.
"Probably shaking in his fur," Dog'Trot, an orange he-cat, retorted.
"I am not shaking in my fur," I grumbled.
"Woah there tiger, you may be able to take down an apprentice, but don't get snappy with a warrior. You're lucky we don't kill you," Yarrow'Snare snarled. My ears pinned and my claws unsheathed.
"You're lucky I don't kill you, too," I hissed. It was an empty threat, both cats were bigger than me, so I'd lose in a heartbeat.
"What was that?" Dog'Trot turned around also and bared his teeth at me. I took a few steps back and exhaled shakily.
"Nothing, sorry," I whispered.
"No, I think I heard something." Yarrow'Snare stepped fully into the den and lashed her tail behind her. I looked at Robin, still fast asleep, and fixated my gaze on her again.
"I didn't mean it," I croaked.
"Yeah you did." She slammed her paw over my head, with her claws sheathed. I fell onto the cave floor with a harsh grunt. "Don't even think about getting up." She pressed her paw into my head and held me down.
I couldn't speak.
"Yarrow'Snare, let him up, not like he can do anything." Dog'Trot laughed. She snickered and kicked my jaw.
"They're prisoners, why not treat them like some? They're both lucky they aren't dead." She scoffed, "Splotched'Star is getting too comfortable with outsiders." I flicked my ears and rubbed my chin.
There has to be a way out of here.
I crawled to Robin and nuzzled my head into his shoulder.
"I'm tired," he grumbled sleepily.
"Your friends wanted to play," I whispered. Robin pawed at my face until he found my nose and pushed me away. I licked his leg that hadn't fully recovered from the dog bite.
One day I'll go back and murder every single one of those barn cats.
I just lied to myself.
