The steady thump of the fetal heartbeat filled the room, a rhythmic pulse that always made me smile. It was more than just a sound—it was proof of life, of growth, of everything my patients endure to bring a new soul into the world. "You been takin' that iron like I told you, right? 'Cause your numbers lookin' way better this time," I said, shifting the wand away from her belly and reaching for a tissue to wipe off the cool gel.

Reese, one of my younger patients in her second trimester, nodded quickly. "Yeah, yeah—I been takin' 'em forreal. My mama been on my ass about it, too."

I chuckled, snapping off my gloves and tossing them in the trash. "Good. I'on wanna hear nothin' 'bout you passin' out or feelin' dizzy."

"Still be tired, though," she sighed, pulling her shirt back down over her bump.
