Two days after the party, Lilly felt indifferent. I feel like a whore. I'll never trust Jayce again. This was all his fault. It was 12 noon, and the Los Angeles sky sunk low, as if a storm was amuck. 13 missed calls. I have 13 from these past two days. Lilly picked up the phone and looked at them for the first time. The phone read:
Three missed calls from Mommy
Five missed calls from Daddy
One missed call from Sage
One missed call from Mason
One missed call, and a voicemail from Addilyn
Two missed calls, two voicemails, and five messages, from Jayce.
Lilly dismissed Jayce's failed connections, then clicked on Addilyn's voicemail.
"Hey it's Addilyn. Call me back."
Well duh its Addilyn. Has the bitch never heard of caller ID? Lilly thought with grudge, then called Addilyn and she answered on the fourth ring.
"Hey." Addilyn said.
"Hey." Lilly said. There was a long awkward pause.
"...Can I come over?" Addilyn said, shattering the silence.
"Sure."
Lilly sat in her bean bag chair and looked at her memory wall. Freshman year was at her old high school. Lilly and Sage looked like 12-year-olds, ready for the adventures of high school as they posed in their uniforms. Lilly held up a peace sign, and Sage put her hand on her hip and stuck out her tongue in a silly way. Freshmen really are funny. The other pictures for freshman year included Lilly attending homecoming with Sage and Sage's boyfriend at the time. Sage, of course, ditched Lilly and ran off with her new squeeze. She remembered how she sat there the whole night, by herself, until a Shuffle Song came on. Lilly then made friends with this boy with leg braces. His nickname was Ice, and he balanced himself by holding on to Lilly's arm as they danced beats behind the rest.
Thunder rolled throughout the room like a semi, followed seconds later by the grand ringing of the door bell. Lilly went down stairs and opened the threshold, reveling humid air and a soaking Addilyn.
"Addilyn... Why are you soaking wet?" Lilly asked, trying not to show in her eyes that Addilyn now looked less than perfect.
"Well I did have to walk over to your door, and it is storming." Addilyn said coming in. "Can I get a towel?"
"Right, I guess the rain is coming down pretty hard. And sure." Although Lilly had plenty of book smarts, her common sense wasn't as on point. The rain continued to collide with the house, producing a static-like noise as Lilly went to the bathroom to obtain a towel.
"Thanks." Addilyn said as she dabbed herself off. As Lilly waited for Addilyn to dry off, she wondered if she knew what happened- that she'd gone to a college party with Jayce, and that he left her. It's not like Jayce would tell her, so did anyone?
"I'm sorry for what happened at the graduation party. It wasn't your fault. And I feel horrible about making you feel the need to leave early." Addilyn said, wrapping the towel around her head, trying to keep busy to avoid awkward eye contact.
