You know those days when you're basically afraid to check your phone? It could be for a number of reasons. Rather it be a crazy ex, posts on social media, or a text from your mom telling you to come home and babysit. You would feel guilty if you saw it and ignored it, so you rather not see it at all. Cowardly, Lilly sat in her office chair and watched her phone light up from various texts on the charger. Sage was too bossy, Addilyn was the bearer of bad news, and Jayce had probably sent her something that would send her over the edge of insanity.

"Okay, if I get another text I'll finally check it." Lilly confirmed, hoping the texts would just stop because she jinxed it. Three minutes surpassed, and Lilly got up to take a shower. "This is my second day not talking to my friends, and my second time this summer. What's wrong with me? Things are not right with me... I must be staying from the person I'm meant to be." She let the water just run over her hair. The voluminous curly afro dulled to heavy wet curls. "I'm meant to be garrulous and kind, not this misanthropic donkey I've become. And I'm stressing out, I look like, 50." Lilly soaped up grudgingly, as if she was trying to wash off her aloofness. As she was rinsing, she heard her phone ring. She wouldn't of rushed out normally, but she heard a familiar voice say: "hello?" She abruptly ended the shower cranking the knobs off, grabbing a robe and towel, and slipping on her house shoes.

"Mom?!" She said as she opened the door to her room.

"Yes, hold on." Lilly's mom said to the person on the other line. "I was just answering the phone for you while you were in the shower, Miss Missy." Mrs. Felincy answered as if she was offended at Lilly's tone.

"How officious of you, Mommy." Lilly tried to say in the nicest tone she could speak with the nervousness building up of who was on the other line.

"Well if I'm so unneeded, I'll just go then." Mrs. Felincy said handing the phone to Lilly. Before she chickened out, Lilly immediately pressed the phone to her ear. She took a deep breath.

"Hello?" She asked softly.

"Hey Lilly." The male voice spoke nonchalantly, and she was glad to hear it wasn't Jayce.

"Oh, hi Mason. I haven't heard from you in a while. What's up?" Lilly asked with her guard up. Sure, her and Mason were friends. But not the call you for no reason, friends. Something must have happened.

"Well I was wondering if you can meet me for lunch at some cafe that's nearby?"

"Sure, I need to get out the house. How about the one right off the Boulevard?"

"Cool. See you in 30." He hung up the phone.

The cafe had outdoor seats, and Lilly saw Mason occupying one of them. She waved as she crossed the street from where she parked, and he raised his hand in acknowledgement. Once she reached the table, she sat down in the low seat with a flop.

"So, how have you been?" He asked trying to strike up conversation.

"I've been... being. A human being. Which could be sad, cause I've been being a different human being than my normal self." She answered nodding her head like what she said made perfect sense.

Mason looked to his left. "Wow that's interesting... Yep. You're not normal so I guess it's actually normal."

"I'm normal when I'm my normal self. The problem is that I haven't been my normal self."
