CHAPTER NINE

THOMAS rushed into the Med-Jack, nearly bumping into Eleanor who turned around ready to tell him to be more careful until her eyes fell down on the syringe he was holding out.

A blue liquid filled the tube, her eyes lighted up as if somehow, she knew what it could do.

"Where did you get that from?" Eleanor asked, moving closer to him and stopping when she saw Newt and the girl walking into the Hut.

"This could save Alby." Thomas said, holding out the syringe to Newt.

Newt hesitated, eyeing the syringe. "We don't even know what this stuff is. We don't know who sent it, or why it came up with you."

"For all we know, this thing could kill him," Newt added.

"He's already dying. Look at him. How could this possibly make it any worse? Come on, it's worth a try." Thomas tried convincing; his voice filled with urgency.

"Newt, we should try, I think Thomas is right." Eleanor stepped in.

Newt exhaled, conflicted but still nodded. "All right, do it."

Thomas took the syringe, hands trembling as he stepped toward Alby. He hesitated, unsure when to inject it, until Alby grabbed his shirt, eyes wild, shouting, "You shouldn't be here."

Eleanor rushed forward "Inject it now!"

"Get the syringe!" Thomas yelled out, Teresa moving faster than Eleanor snatched the syringe, injecting it into Alby without hesitation. The room stilled as Alby's body started calming down.

"Well...that worked." Jeff awkwardly spoke up

"Thank god it did." Eleanor breathed,  tucking a loose strand of her hair behind her ears, her breath heavy from the scare she just had.

Newt's voice broke through the tension "Okay, from now on someone stays here and watches him around the clock." She nods in response, still catching her breath

Just then, Gally stepped inside the hut "Hey. Sundown Greenie. Time to go." Everyone looked at Thomas as he quietly left.

Eleanor's gaze lingered on Alby. His veins still darker than they were supposed to be. The sight made her stomach churn. "I'll be right back, I need to talk to Thomas really quick." she muttered, leaving the hut.

She found Thomas inside the Slammer already "Hey, Thomas." she called softly.

He looked up, startled, before relaxing "You scared me, but it's just you, blondie."

Eleanor rolled her eyes, hiding the smile that threatened to appear at the nickname.

"Who else would it be? I mean I know Jack has a really feminine voice but-"

"you're not the only girl anymore."

"Right. I'm not."  The words stung more than they should've, but she shook it off.  "Anyway, I  came to ask you something."

"Ask me what?"

"Where did you get the syringe from?" She asked

Thomas crossed his arms "What if I ask a question too, blondie. How did you know what it was?"

"What? I didn't know what it was." Eleanor scoffed, trying to sound convincing.

"You're a terrible liar. You know something we don't. And those nightmares you keep having? Not exactly normal."

Dammit how does he notice everything? She asked herself, frustrated that nothing could go past him.

"I asked first, Thomas"

"Fair enough blondie, Teresa had it with her and I just assumed it could help." He tilted his head  "Your turn."

"It's a long story."

"I have all night." he responded

"Well, I don't."

"Then summarize it."

She exhaled before saying "I've seen it before..." Eleanor paused, she hesitated, her voice growing quiet. "I got stung by a Griever once."

Thomas blinked "What? " He asked completely shocked, not expecting that at all.

"Anyways, that syringe arrived with the Box, and it said it was specifically for me so that's about it." She finished, cutting half of the story but Thomas knew it was better than nothing.

Thomas frowned, still confused "Then how did Newt not know what it was?"

"He doesn't know I got stung."

"How–?"

"Don't ask." she cut him off, her voice firm.

She looked down, avoiding his gaze. "You know it's weird how it only came up when I was the one stung, but not for Ben or anyone else."

"It's not your fault though" his voice soft

"I never said it was"

"Your eyes do." His words cut deep. Her expression changed completely when he mentioned it, her eyes wandering somewhere else.

"Look-" she got interrupted by the sound of steps behind her, Chuck appeared, smiling innocently.

Eleanor straightened "I should go, I have things to do..." She ruffled Chuck's hair as she passed him.
