CHAPTER EIGHTY | MIDNIGHT CONFESSION

Storm was gobsmacked as he stood there before her. For a while, he thought his ears had failed him. One moment turned into two and two turned into three before Sophia pulled away from him with a furrow between her eyebrows. He hadn't reciprocated.

Why hadn't he reciprocated?

"Come again?"

Her expression scavenged through a catalogue of emotions. First, she was angry and then confused before settling with disappointment. She was hurt. He hadn't reciprocated and despite Sophia being well aware that he loved her he hadn't reciprocated. Had she rushed into her confession? He loved her, didn't he?

He took a step forward, seeing her flinch and take several back. Despite her downplaying the reaction, he'd seen it, the organ in his chest twisting painfully at the action. Was she still scared of him? "Sophia..." He just wanted to know if he'd heard her right.

Her eyebrows furrowed further. Why wouldn't he say it back?

"You love me?"

Her gaze fell to her hands, staring at the necklace she had wrapped around her wrist, the heart locket that he'd gifted her. Emotions tightened her throat with everything it symbolised. "I... I think so." She knew so. Or so she thought.

Why hadn't he said it back?

Despite his erratic heartbeat, Storm couldn't help but feel disappointed. "You think so?"

Embarrassed and angry, she pushed away, leaving him outside on the balcony as she charged inside, the guards remaining close to her as she walked away. The action had caused a few stares. After all, everyone knew how inseparable the two were. Everyone knew of Storm's little obsession what the sapphire-eyed girl.

"Sophia..." Storm followed. It hadn't been his intention to belittle her feelings or hurt her. He didn't want her to be angry with him. He'd just been gobsmacked by her confession and rather hurt that she only thought it. "Let's talk about it."

"No." Sophia walked past people as they watched the two love birds evidently fighting as the young girl walked away from the desperate Storm. They'd never seen Storm so desperate before. "It doesn't matter."

Anxiety suddenly shot through him when she drew away from his touch, avoiding it completely. It was the first time in months that the two hadn't seen eye to eye, the first time they'd fought. And he hated it. He fucking despised it.

"I'm mad."

Temporary relief filled him. Storm was happy that she at least was being transparent about her emotions. "Komne, saphirchik." Come here, little sapphire

Suddenly it all hurt. Her eyes burned, her skin crawled and her organs twisted. Why did that sweet nickname suddenly make her feel so tormented by grief as if she'd lost something? She felt like she'd lost everything.

Why hadn't he reciprocated? Why wouldn't he just say it back?

"I-I—!" Sophia angrily wiped her eyes, not caring about how the action smudged her makeup. She was so distraught by the intense pain in her chest. It felt like he'd punctured a gaping hole through her. "I w-wanna be alone."

The thin hairs on his neck stood in apprehension. "Come again?"

"I wanna be alone." Sophia glared, determined to get her way.

He took a cautious step forward. Why did it suddenly feel like they'd taken a dozen steps back? He hated it. He hated it, hated it, fucking hated it. "But, Sophia..." Storm couldn't let her do that. He needed her close at all times, to know that she was safe, protected and happy. He needed that more than he needed air.
