(A/N! I am adding my headcanons to Macaque's design, don't worry there aren't any major changes! Just a few little things here and there ^^)
Soft cricket sounds clicked under the night sky, and loud honks from Megapolis were in the distance. You peacefully slept on a tree out of the city, the same spot you and the others were from the Aftermath of LBD.
You were enjoying your slumber when your instincts woke you up, you cracked your right eye open and cautiously looked around. Your ear twitched in irritation.
One of the only times you get to be by yourself and someone trying to interrupt that? Yeah, you weren't having that. A low growl slipped through your teeth, now you were too uneasy to fall back asleep. Great.
You hopped down from your tree and glanced up at the sky. A pitch-black blanket covered the horizon with dust of purple and blue. Small speckles glimmered out from the sky, besides all of the stars was a giant white crescent.
You admired the peaceful stars in front as a breeze of wind gilded passed you. You couldn't draw your eyes away from the giant crescent in the sky, rays of light from the moon cast down from above creating a shadow behind you.
You cocked your head to the side. Your ears were fully perked up and your pupils were thin, sharp lines. Your tail began to swing slightly faster, "Stop hiding, I know you're here." You hissed.
You fully turned your body around to get a better look at the mysterious figure. The rays of moonlight struck the figure, allowing you to see it. Wispy black fur covered the animal except for its face and palms. His skin was a tan, toffee color. A slip of dark, red fur went from one eye to the other, you could see on his left eye a giant scar that covered the whole eye and even went up to create a slight cut in his bushy brows. A sly smirk curled onto his lips, allowing his fangs to slip out. His tail casually swayed rhythmically, hypnotizing almost.
Once realizing who it was, you huffed in annoyance, "You disturbed my slumber, Macaque."
"Sorry, Precious, I couldn't help myself." Macaque chuckled.
You rolled your eyes at the nickname, "What do you want?"
He leaned forward with his hands behind his back, "Ouch, so cruel, you really do hurt me, M/n." He cooed.
You shook your head, "No, just anytime when you talk to me and the others, you usually want something out of it."
"Am I not allowed to chat with old buddies?" He teased me.
You sighed, "Do what you want." You slumped down onto the edge of the cliff, your legs dangling beneath you while you watched the stars twinkle in the moonlit sky.
Macaque slid his way beside you and sat himself down. You glanced over at him before averting your gaze back at the stars. He was the first to speak up, "How've you been?"
"Alright, you?"
"Good for the most part." He shrugged.
A drawn-out silence cursed you both before you finally broke it, "What happened to you?" Macaque cocked an eyebrow in confusion, before he could make a smartass remark you interjected, "I mean, when you tricked the Mortal, pretending to become his new mentor. I thought you were dead."
Macaque sighed and looked down painfully, his eyebrows crinkled as he tried to avoid eye contact, "Did Wukong tell you the true story?"
"What do you mean?"
"Did he tell you how I died?"
Now to think of it, he never mentioned how he died... You grew curious, "No, why?"
"Should've expected. A while back, Wukong and I had gotten into a...tussle. It was pretty violent, eventually our clashing came to an end with him winning by plugging his staff into my right eye." His voice croaked, and a wash of anguish rushed over his face as burning memories filled his thoughts.
Your eyes widen, and a mixture of horror and shock spreads across your face, "Well, that explains the scar..." You exhaled harshly, "So, how'd you come back?"
"After Wukong killed me, I was trapped in the under, bound to suffer for all of eternity. However, Lady Bone Demon freed me from the chains in exchange for her being released from her tomb. Once being resurrected, I was given the Skeleton Key to release her, but I disregarded it and sought to get my revenge on Wukong."
You looked down in silence, "I'm sorry, Macaque..."
"I don't need your sympathy, It was a long time ago." He waved off.
"I don't feel sympathy for you, I feel empathy." He looked back at you, if you looked closely you could see a glimpse of shock in his golden irises, "Wukong's wrong for us both. Granted, he didn't kill me, but we've still been hurt by the same person."
"And that was...?" His voice trailed off, he was trying to guess if it was because of the dispute you and Wukong had a while back or if it was something more recent. I guess it was your turn to dump Wukong.
"Before I met the Mortals, Wukong had defeated the Demon Bull King, successfully trapped under the mountain. He told me he was going to retire, he only had one request for me, and that was to guard the staff until he'd come back." You paused briefly before continuing, "Like a stupid, obedient dog, I obliged. I guarded the staff for 500 years, patiently waiting for his return. I came to find out that he had no intentions of coming back, he made me do his dirty work."
Macaque glanced back at you and continued watching the stars, "Sounds like Wukong for you."
"He's gotten better... sorta..." You mumbled the last part, "Now that he has to train the Mortal, he has to get better about his 'using people' issue."
Macaque nodded, "How's the kid anyway? Matter of fact, how are they all doing so far."
You gulped, "It could be better..." You trailed off, "Wukong's protege has been out of it since the Lady Bone Demon attack, the other Mortal (Mei) has been having issues with her Samadhi fire, The pig demon and his...friend?...husband? Have been getting increasingly worried about Monkey King's protege. The fish man seems to be fine though."
Macaque chuckled at how you refused to say their names, "Wow, M/n, that was unnecessarily complicated."
You scoffed, "You know where I stand on mortal titles." You crossed your arms over your chest and turned yourself away from Macaque, "I've, Uhm, been increasingly worried about his state as well, Wukong's protege."
Macaque nodded silently, turned back to the moon and watched the stars dance in the sky, "You know, I don't really know what to do with myself anymore." Macaque admitted, "After Lady Bone Demon, I don't have the desire to get my revenge on Wukong anymore."
You glanced back at him, "Oddly enough, same. I'm waiting for the next catastrophe to happen."
"I guess we'll just wait together?"
"Maybe..."

HEY YA'LL.... sorry for not writing for *checks calendar as I quietly count how long it's been since I've last wrote* Yeesh... 2 weeks...! Hehe, I guess I owe ya'll an explantion for being radio silent, huh?
I've been back logged with schoolwork, I've had to switch math classes, doing schoolwork, prep for test, etc etc. So, I've been quite busy. By the time I've finished my work, I'm too unmotivated to write from being burnt out. I don't want to force myself to write and end up hating it and just give up on this fanfic, I want to produce quality writing and have fun while doing so.
So in that case, future chapters may be less frequent but I'll try my best to not make the duration so long (like this one). I think the main reason why this one was so late on coming out is because I've been so busy with school and trying to revise my schedule.
Geez, well, thank you for listening to me...rant? vent? whatever you call this lol!
(Also I may or may not have a quotev account currently in the process of being made....hehe!)
