chloe.
"Duckie's my favorite."
"Let me guess, she doesn't pick him, does she?" Spencer asks.
"How did you know?!"
"It's called the law of economy of characters. Basically, a lot of productions have tight budgets and don't allow for unnecessary characters. Also, he's a nerd, and there's another guy on the cover of the movie." He shrugs. "Nerds never get the girl in '80s movies."
I stare at him, my jaw dropped.
"I can't believe you just guessed the movie!"
"I know." He lets out a little giggle, almost like he's proud. "Morgan hates it."
I chuckle as we keep watching. Spencer looks a little forlorn as he stares at the screen.
"Are you okay?" I ask.
"Yeah," he murmurs. "I'm just thinking about how different high school would have been if I'd been... you know, older."
"It was hard for you, huh?" I ask.
I keep forgetting he was like 10 when he started high school. That can't have been an easy adjustment, and I don't expect his peers treated him well. Kids are just plain nasty sometimes.
"Yeah." He shifts uncomfortably in his seat. "I basically had a target on my back."
"You were so young."
"I know." He lets out a hollow chuckle, a bright smile still etched on his face, but his eyes are dull when they meet mine. "But I don't think they cared about that."
"We don't have to talk—"
"I was in the library, and uh... Harper Hillman comes up to me. And she tells me that Alexa Lisbon wants to meet me behind the field house." He pauses, scoffing as he shakes his head. "Alexa Lisbon's, like, easily the prettiest girl in school."
My eyes well with tears, the tension in his face already telling me where this is going.
"When I got there, Alexa was there... and so was the entire football team. They stripped me naked and tied me to a goal post. So many kids were there, you know? Just watching..."
"Nobody tried to stop them from—"
"No," he murmurs. "I begged them to, but they just watched. And, finally, they got bored and they left. It was like midnight when I finally got home."
"My mom didn't—" His voice breaks and he lets out another laugh, and I don't know if it's to put me at ease or because he simply doesn't know how to reiterate the cruelty he experienced. "My mom was having one of her episodes so she didn't even realize I was late."
