The city never truly sleeps, but there are moments when it seems to hold its breath. In the early hours, just before dawn, the world is caught in that fragile space between night and day, where shadows linger and everything feels suspended in time.
It's in these moments that decisions are made—not in the glaring light of day, but in the quiet, stolen hours when the rest of the world is still.
Vienna had been curled up for so long that her entire body felt numb. When she tried to straighten herself, her legs wobbled, and she nearly toppled off the narrow cement ledge.
Just then, Ni-ki stepped forward, catching her in his arms. The scent of dried sweat and the pungent odor from the trash clung to her, nearly overwhelming his senses, but he held her steady without flinching.
Ni-ki pulled Vienna in through the window, almost as if he were hauling a heavy sack. Once she was inside, safe within the dimly lit room, Ni-ki began to brush the leaves and bits of unidentifiable trash from her hair and clothes. His movements grew increasingly rough as frustration bubbled beneath the surface.
When he was finally done, he closed the windows with a sharp snap, turning to her with an icy tone, "Who did this to you?"
Streaks of lightning lit up the room, casting fleeting shadows on their pale faces.
"I'm asking you a question!" Ni-ki's voice cut through the silence, sharp and demanding. His frustration was palpable. "Who the fuck did this to you?!"
Vienna lowered her head, her voice barely above a whisper as she finally spoke, "Your arm... is it better?"
A flicker of surprise crossed Ni-ki's face. The anger that had been simmering within him seemed to dissipate in an instant. He instinctively flexed his arm, the one that had just healed, before turning his gaze away from Vienna.
"It's fine now," he muttered, his voice softer, the edge of his earlier frustration dulled.
