Mystery POV

.....

The file containing her information was sitting on my desk. The news of a new dragon rider had been brought into my office a few days ago. She managed to fly under the radar for quite some time but she won't get away this time. With her disappearance, it would be the best task for him. The door creaked open, and my prized pupil walked through.

"Sir." He greets.

"No need for such formalities," I say, he moves into a relaxed position. "Your mission." I hand him the file. He looks at the papers and looks back at me.

"There's no picture of her, no age, no family. Her description is very vague. Approximately 5'6, lean figure, dark long hair, dark brown eyes. That can be anyone. How am I supposed to find her?"

"Aaron, you're a smart kid. I took her more personal information out knowing you would find the dragon rider either way. However I'll tell you she lived in the north sector edge of town, went into the forest never came back according to her family. We have reason to believe she is a dragon rider."

"How many men are to be accompanying me?"

"None, this is a solo mission. If you are to succeed you will no longer be a junior officer, you can consider yourself as my second in command." Aaron seemed to like this idea.

"What am I to do if I find her?"

"Kill her."

Scarlet POV

Life couldn't be better, a few days had passed since I left. Ember had become my best friend, Bane had become my partner in crime, and the other dragons my family. I laughed and had so much fun. It was like I had been here my whole life. It was amazing the way they all lived. They had hunters who would bring back food to the cove. Guards and healers that lived here as well. One of the healers, Mizu, was one of funniest person or dragon I've ever met. She and I went for a fly over the lake which then became a swim. After getting to know more the dragons there was leadership that they all respected. There was a council that governed life in the cove. Ember was the lead, with Bane second in command and several other dragons that dealt with any problems should any arise.

"Ember I really want to go back, to my house I need a few things. I know when no one will be around." I say to her. Though it was true that I wanted to pack some things I wanted to say goodbye to my parents at least. I would leave them a note to give them some piece of mind. It was great to be in the cove but I felt guilty for leaving my parents. They needed to know.

Alright but I and Bane are accompanying you. Pack what you need we will leave in a few hours. Ember responds after contemplating it for a while

"Thank you," I say as I run off to the caves.

I packed a backpack, water and a bit of food. I also shoved a light jacket in there as well. I didn't have to worry about staying warm at night anymore. Everything had fallen into a routine, I would go to sleep and Ember would wrap her wings around me keeping me warm and safe during the night. If not for her I would be hyperthermic within a few hours

Outside Bane was already waiting for us. He was chomping down on a fish. Even though the society would broadcast that dragons ate people they preferred fish though pigs, boars, cows, and sheep were okay too. Ember lowered her neck allowing me to get on. Ember had taken me flying many times after I had settled in. I found my place with the dragons. We took off in the air Bane was flying a bit below us. I looked down at him closed my eyes and slid off Ember.

.....

I landed on my feet in the center of Bane's back, right at the point where his wings meet his body.

A warning would have been nice. Bane says jokingly.

"Take it as a compliment that a trust you so much to 'fall off' Ember," I tease him and sit down.

We stopped a mile from my house. I left them and made the walk to my house, not wanting to risk them being spotted. I made sure the house was empty before going in. I figured front door was locked so I went around to my bedroom window and pushed it open. Luckily I never lock my window in case of an emergency or if I need to sneak in or out. I climbed inside stepping on my bed and then onto the floor. I emptied out my book bag and stacked my school books on my bed.

I went to my dresser and packed some extra clothes. I grabbed an extra pair of shoes and a hairbrush. I packed a few other things a notepad and some pens and pencils. I sat on my bed for a little looking at my room for what might be the last time. I tore out a piece of paper and began my letter.

Mom and Dad,

I'm sorry for worrying you but I'm fine. I'm better than fine in fact, I can't really explain. I hope you can trust me when I say I am truly happy. I'm sorry but I don't think I will be able to come back. I love you both.

Scar.

I folded the note in half and put in on the bed. I looked around one last time. I was opening the window and started to climb out of it when a voice stopped me in my tracks.

"Scarlet?"
