The Last Dragon Rider

Chapter 5

Aaron's POV

.....

This seems like a good place to start. I was at the edge of town in the north sector, I was at the forest line. I didn't have any men to back me up like I was used to. Never had I'd been sent to kill a dragon rider, my missions were all dragons. I had my bow and arrow strapped to my back. I had 5 dragon arrows, the only thing that could make a dent in a dragon's scales. I had to admit I was a bit nervous, this was my first solo mission. I am Aaron Alaric, my father would show no hesitation neither can I. Do this, earn his approval, it's like any other assignment. I prep myself for anything to come and then stare into the trees. I have a mission to complete and nothing is going to stop me.

Scarlet's POV

Crap

"Mom, what are you doing here?"My eyes widen at the sight of her. She clearly had not well slept in a few days I was gone. There were dark bags under her eyes, her hair was disheveled, and her clothes were wrinkled.

"Scarlet? Is that you?" She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around me squeezing me tight. I hug back "You've had us worried sick your father-" She stopped. My hair was always pushed on to one side to cover my mark but, lately, I had moved my hair back allowing my mark to be seen. My hair was in a braid that went down my back. I had completely forgotten about it, back at the cove I showed my mark proudly. She backed up when she got a good look at the flame.

"I came to get a few things then I'm going back, you won't be seeing me again. I'm sorry. Goodbye." I pushed past her. I didn't want to make it any harder than it already was. I couldn't stay here. She grabbed my hand.

"Scarlet what's going on?"

"I'm sorry mom." I pulled her into another hug. "I love you, but I need to get going." I smiled and pulled away. I marched out, my mom followed me out with a phone in her hand.

"Going where? Where?" She calls out. I don't look back knowing if I do I won't be able to leave without a few tears.

"Honey, it's me, Scarlet she's at the house... she's leaving, John, listen she's, she's. I'll tell you later." She hung the phone I'm guessing she was talking to my father.

"Ember! Bane!" I shout knowing they would be able to hear me. Dragons have heightened senses better than any human could ever hope for. Even they were far away they could hear me

"Scarlet! Scarlet wait! Wait!" My mom yells as she jogs to catch up with me. I looked up to the sky Ember and Bane were coming my way.

"I am who I am I won't put you and dad in danger," I explain to her. I hold her hands in mines.

"I'll be okay Mom," I smile at her and she seems at a loss for words. I know Ember and Bane are getting closer. My mom won't be in trouble with the society after I leave

"I'm sorry." I say to her. Ember swoops down and I grab onto Ember's wing. We flying up into the clouds. I look down at my mom as she mouths Dragon Rider . That's the last thing I saw before we reach the clouds.

I had learned many things from my time away from home, one of the many things is that they were wrong. Dragons were caring, I saw the way they took care of their young and each other, how they took care of me. I spent some of my time helping Mizu fix up the hatchlings after they were fooling around and someone got hurt. Dragons were no different from humans. People were wrong about them I wanted them to know the truth.

"Okay, okay. be quiet." I whispered. We had made it back, it was now dark and most of the dragons were now sleeping.

"Are you ready?" I couldn't help but smile." 3,2,1 go" Bane released the water he had carried with his wings and dumped it all onto a sleeping Ember's head.

RUN!!! Bane yells as we book it out of Ember's cave and into his, laughing all the way hoping tomorrow Ember wouldn't kick our tails or more like Bane's tail. We hear Ember roar, I clutch my stomach and Bane rolls on his back laughing

"That was awesome." I comment. For tonight I settle down in Bane's cave. Tonight wasn't cold at all and I could sleep separately. For the whole week to be freezing its weird that now it's almost warm. Maybe it's just the cove weather, new home, new life. My eyes grow heavy and I'm positive that when I fell asleep I was still smiling.

The light had just begun to pour into the cave entrance when I heard someone coming closer to the cave entrance.

Who's idea was it? Ember shouted I scrambled to my feet still half asleep. I had forgotten I had slept in Bane's cave. I registered the question and pointed at Bane, as he pointed a talon at me. Ember shook her head but she was smiling.

Scarlet, can I talk to you? Ember asked

"Yeah sure." I followed Ember to the gigantic lake.

How was last night? Not too cold?

"Last night the weather was great. Does the temperature always change so much?" Now I was curious why had Ember brought me out here.

Last night was the coldest one this week, you're changing.

"What do you mean changing."

What makes dragons riders so special and different is that they are connected to spirits of Dragons and once they spent enough time with Dragons they will start to change.

"Change? Change how?" I ask getting a bit scared. I'm picturing myself with scales going up and down my body with a tail behind me. What does she mean by change exactly?

You'll just have to wait and see. Ember says before flying off.
