"Oh my God, stop! I think I'm going to throw up!" I cried, desperately trying to distance myself from the revolting concoction that Sophia was insisting I drink. It was a forfeit for losing the game, but this so-called "bug juice" was more than I could handle.
My hands flew to my mouth, trying to create a barrier against the incoming attack, but Sophia was relentless. With Karina and Lilly's help, she pried my hands away, inching closer with a devilish grin plastered on her face.
"No, no, no, please! I'll do anything else!" I shouted, squirming like a fish out of water.
Sophia, however, continued her dramatic advance, savoring every moment of my misery.
"No, no, no! Please, no! Ahhhhhhh—"
"Sarang! Sarang, wake up! It's just me..." Sophia's voice broke through the chaos as she gently slapped my face, trying to pull me out of the nightmare.
My eyes fluttered open, the morning light from the open curtains blinding me momentarily. Groaning, I tried to sit up, but the pounding headache sent me crashing back down.
"This is why I hate drinking. Oh my God," I muttered, rubbing my temples as if it would magically erase the pain.
Sophia chuckled, handing me a bowl of hangover soup. "Here, drink this. You'll feel better."
I glared at her, memories of the previous night flooding back. "This is all your fault," I grumbled, taking a cautious sip of the hot soup.
It was comforting, but I couldn't let her off the hook that easily. "You guys always get me into trouble."
Sophia smiled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "You're the one who lost the game, remember?"
Sophia had been my best friend since I moved to America seven years ago. After junior year, my parents decided it would be best for me to live with my grandmother here, far from the life I'd known in Korea.
My mental health had been deteriorating rapidly, and though I fought against leaving, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I graduated high school in this foreign land, and though the transition was tough at first, meeting Sophia made everything easier.
She was a Japanese-American mix, and we clicked instantly. We even went to the same high school in my senior year and got accepted into the same prestigious university, where we've been inseparable ever since.
Living with Sophia has been one of the best parts of my life here. We share everything—our dreams, our struggles, our hopes for the future. Both of us are determined to graduate from med school and become surgeons, a goal that keeps us working tirelessly despite the overwhelming workload.
My parents, meanwhile, thought it was a good idea to send me here to finish high school and attend college. In truth, they wanted to protect me from the darkness that had consumed me back in Korea.
At first, I hated them for it. I hated that they thought I was too weak to handle my own life. But now, as I sit here in the dorm room I share with Sophia, sipping hangover soup after a night of laughter and games, I'm grateful.
