DJ felt numb as she sat in the back of an ambulance. It was a piece of a metal fence that had stabbed her shoulder, so in addition to stitches, she had to go to a doctor and get a tetanus shot in her free time.
She was an actual baby when it came to shots, tears welling in her eyes just thinking of it.
Tyler was holding her hand as the paramedic stitched her up. All around them was the destroyed remains of the rodeo arena and the motel. Countless people had died because they had no warning.
It wasn't long before the Tornado Wrangler crew found them, everyone worried over DJ, crowding around her.
And she absolutely hated that she couldn't get up and go find Scott when the Storm PAR cars pulled into the lot a few minutes after them. He had no idea she was even there since her text never went out. But she also knew he had to focus on the work his uncle had him doing, so she wouldn't be the first person he checked on even if he did know.
"Kate!" Javi shouted suddenly, running toward them. She quickly stepped away from them and met him halfway. "Kate!"
Once he pulled away from the hug, he began rambling. "When I saw the size of it and where it was headed, all I could think was—"
"Javi. I'm alright," she said before looking back at Tyler, who was talking to Ben and Lily at the ambulance.
"So, where did you stick it out?" Ben was asking.
Tyler nodded to the pool. "Right down here."
"Good call," Lily said.
"It was all Kate. She was amazing," DJ said weakly, wincing as the needle was pushed back into her skin. Tyler held her hand harder.
"We're almost done," the paramedic told her. "One more."
"You've been with Owens the whole time?" Javi asked Kate, raising a skeptical eyebrow.
"Yeah. Why?" Kate asked, thinking nothing of it.
Javi made a face, not quite impressed with her choice of company. But before he could comment on it, they were joined by Scott.
"Javi. Apparently, this place was family-owned. So, I'm gonna start working up some numbers. Riggs is gonna want those first thing," Scott said.
Javi just nodded, not really caring. "Okay, man. I - I'll catch up with you."
