IT'S ALRIGHT, DELILAH-JANE.

THE next time that DJ saw Scott and Javi was the next morning

THE next time that DJ saw Scott and Javi was the next morning. And much to the former's annoyance, she walked right up to them, a smile on her seemingly perfect face with that damn dog at her side. Scott ignored Daisy as she sniffed his ankles curiously.

"Morning, DJ," Javi said, managing a tired smile.

"Hey, y'all," she greeted.

"Hey, y'all," Scott mocked under his breath, looking back at his tablet.

DJ heard him, of course, and sucked on her teeth for a minute before smiling once more. "We stopped at this bakery this morning to get more bread for the meal kits we hand out. Got some blueberry croissants. Thought you might like some breakfast."

"Oh, I never say no to food," Javi said, a real grin on his face now. He reached into the brown paper bag and pulled out a croissant as big as his hand, a light dusting of sugar coating it.

Then DJ turned toward Scott, offering the bag.

"I don't like blueberries," Scott said simply, not looking at her.

Javi furrowed his eyebrows. "They're your favorite."

DJ let his obvious rejection roll off her shoulders. "Oh, they're my favorite too!" she gushed. "Well, there's one left in the bag. I can leave it with Javi here if you change your mind, Scott."

"And he thanks you," Javi said with a smirk, taking the bag. Then he cut his eyes to Scott. "Don't you?"

Scott sighed as if Javi had asked him to do something incredibly inconvenient, acting like he wouldn't be eating the croissant as soon as Javi and DJ were out of sight. "Thank you, Delilah-Jane."

There he goes, calling her by her full name again, she thought. Even though he sounded so grouchy as he said it, she liked it. She quite enjoyed her full name, but because of Tyler, everyone — even her parents — called her DJ. She never thought to correct them.

"You're welcome, Scott," she said. He tried to keep his jaw from ticking at the way his name fell from her lips. "Have a good day chasing. And stay safe out there."

Again, she walked away from them, and Scott, through sunglasses-covered eyes, watched her carefully as she walked away, her hands behind her back and a skip in her step, the yellow sundress she wore swaying in the wind.

It was two more days — not that he was counting — before he interacted with Delilah-Jane again. Yet again, they met in the gas station store, and though he didn't want to, Scott still held the door open for her.
