I couldn't stand it. The way my father's eyes clouded with pain every time he looked at me. The way his hands trembled when he adjusted my blanket or poured me a glass of water. He tried to be strong for me, but I could see the cracks forming in his resolve.
It wasn't fair. He didn't deserve to carry this burden.
"Riki, you have to do it," I said, gripping his arm as we stood by the hospital window.
"No." His voice was firm, his gaze unwavering as he looked down at me.
"Please." My voice cracked, and I hated how desperate I sounded. "You can erase it. Take this pain away from him."
Riki shook his head, his jaw tightening. "He loves you, Hwayoung. He deserves to know what's happening. I won't take that away from him."
"But it's killing him," I argued, tears pooling in my eyes. "He can't even look at me without breaking down. He's supposed to be happy now. He worked so hard to give me a good life, and now all he feels is guilt and fear."
Riki placed his hands on my shoulders, his expression softening. "And what do you think he'll feel when he realizes what you made me do? You can't protect him from everything, Hwayoung. He's stronger than you think."
I turned away, wiping at my tears. Deep down, I knew he was right. But that didn't make it any easier.
-
Later that evening, my father sat by my bedside, holding my hand as if letting go would make me disappear.
"I'm not leaving," he said firmly, his voice low but resolute. "I'm staying right here until you're better."
"Appa, you don't have to do this," I said softly.
"Yes, I do." His eyes glistened with unshed tears. "You're my daughter, my only family. I've already lost so much—I won't lose you too."
His words pierced my heart, and I felt the familiar sting of guilt. I had to do something.
-
The plan came together quickly, though it left a bitter taste in my mouth. With Riki's help, I managed to fake my hospital test results. It wasn't easy, and it wasn't ethical, but it was necessary.
When the doctors came in the next morning, they wore carefully practiced smiles as they delivered the "good news."
"Your latest test results show significant improvement," the doctor announced, his tone upbeat. "It seems the treatment is working better than expected."
My father's face lit up, and for the first time in days, I saw a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
"Really? She's going to be okay?" he asked, his voice trembling with relief.
The doctor nodded. "Yes. With continued care, we're optimistic about her recovery."
I glanced at Riki, who stood silently in the corner, his expression unreadable. I knew he didn't fully agree with what I was doing, but he had supported me anyway.
"See, Appa? You don't have to worry so much," I said, forcing a smile.
My father squeezed my hand, his eyes misting over. "Thank God," he whispered.
That night, I sat with my father, trying to convince him to go home.
"Appa, you've done so much for me already," I said, leaning against his shoulder. "But you can't stay here forever. You have your own life to live."
"My life is you," he replied simply.
"I'm fine now. You heard the doctor—I'm getting better." I tried to keep my tone light, but my heart ached with every word.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I just... I don't want to leave you alone."
"I'm not alone," I said, glancing toward Riki, who was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. "Riki's here. He'll take care of me."
My father looked at Riki, his gaze searching. "Can I trust you to keep her safe?"
"Yes, sir," Riki said, his voice steady. "You have my word."
After what felt like an eternity, my father finally nodded.
-
The next morning, I stood with my father at the hospital entrance, watching as he prepared to leave.
"Call me if you need anything," he said, his hands lingering on my shoulders.
"I will," I promised.
He hugged me tightly, and I closed my eyes, committing the moment to memory. When he finally let go, he turned to Riki.
"Take care of her," he said, his voice thick with emotion.
"I will," Riki replied, his tone resolute.
As I watched my father walk away, a part of me wanted to run after him, to beg him to stay. But I knew this was for the best.
Riki stepped beside me, his presence steady and grounding.
"You did the right thing," he said softly.
"Did I?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
He didn't answer, but the look in his eyes told me everything I needed to know.
