Being in love with Lafayette, and having Lafayette love me back, was the most amazing thing that had ever happened in my life. It was unbelievable. We stayed at his townhouse the entire weekend, making love in basically every room we could and all of the furniture. We couldn't keep our hands off of each other. We couldn't stop telling each other how much we loved each other. We started planning a trip back to Montevideo. He asked me how much it would cost to break my lease. It was ending soon, anyway.
I texted Alicia what happened. She told Mom and Dad, who were ecstatic. She told Clovis, and it spread to Lafayette's family. They were all happy for him. He called Don about us, who told Jerry, who told everyone else. Michael kept blowing up our phones, but we ignored him. We skipped work Monday to spend all day in bed. We also decided to figure out what to do at work. The addendum to our contract essentially allowed us to be together, but I confessed how I wanted to go back to school for writing. He was going to help me apply (and pay) for college. Once accepted (fingers crossed), I would no longer be his assistant, but of course I would still be in his office any chance I could.
We went into the office Tuesday. He was the happiest I had seen him. His friends were so happy for him. It was a beautiful sight to see.
On Saturday, it was the New York City Pride Parade. The company always had a float in the parade. This year, Lafayette decided to walk in the parade. We all did. As we walked through, he smiled at me, and then he took my hand. He kissed me, in front of the thousands of people attending the parade. It did not take long to hit the news. My social media blew up. People had shipped us since following me after documenting our travels. To see so many people we didn't know support us was amazing. I was so lucky.
After a few months, I was accepted into the writing program at NYU. I even won a scholarship. I was going to start in January. By this point, I had already moved in with Lafayette into the townhouse. We had our family and friends over all the time. His family was becoming friends with my family. He joined me during the holidays to see my family. I joined him to see his family. I started school. I got another publication, this time in a literary magazine.
Over summer, we went back to Montevideo. Here, he proposed to me, with a beautiful emerald and gold band. I of course said yes. We got married in September, a small wedding on the terrace. His family, my family, our friends - they were all there to witness our union of love. We took a three month long honeymoon, traveling the world. At one point, in Greece, all of our families and friends joined us. Mom jokingly asked us about kids, but when Lafayette and I were in the honeymoon suite, we did talk about kids. We wanted kids. We wanted a family. We were going to wait a year or two, but we wanted a big family, which is exactly what we got.
Dean was the first born. Axelle had been the surrogate. Dean Anthony Jett-Lane. Then we had Kenneth. Alicia had been the surrogate, because at this point she and Clovis had gotten married and already had their son, Alex.We named him Kenneth Beau Jett-Lane. We soon after adopted a baby girl from Uruguay. We named her Carmen Anna Jett-Lane. Next, we adopted a baby girl who we named Delphine Evelyn Jett-Lane. We called her Fifi or Evie often. Lastly, we adopted a baby boy. Gabriel Don Jett-Lane.
We were a happy family, living in the townhome. Michael and Emilio eventually adopted some children, after years of thinking they didn't want to be parents, not until they became our kids' uncles. Alicia and Clovis had another child, Emily. Axelle's daughter moved back to the city once she graduated, wanting to reconnect with her mother. Claude remarried and had a new baby born, his kids excited for a new sibling. Carla and Marion, who assumed they would never have kids based on what doctors had said, had a miracle baby - Gloria. Marcus and Daniel got married. They were going to wait for kids.
As Lafayette and I got older, we built a house in Ossining to get out of the city. We wanted the kids to grow up in a smaller community and attend a smaller school, but we often spent the summers in the townhome or abroad. Lafayette's parents even moved to Ossining because they wanted to be closer to the grandkids. By the time Gabriel had started kindergarten, I had a young adult fiction book published, one about LGBTQ+ kids having to save the world from destruction. I also published a murder mystery series, a little enemies-to-lovers between the male detective and the mysterious new man in town. I was working on a collection of creative nonfiction essays now. It was difficult to write about one's own life, but as I was surrounded by my loving family, my beautiful kids, and the most amazing man in the world that I loved dearly and had the honor of calling my husband, I knew where to begin.
I worked for one of the greatest companies in the world, Lafayette Inc....
