Chief Detective Elias Hayes POV
——
...
'He didn't do anything but to get in trouble... tsk.'
My eyes locked to the floor with a glare as I was deeply lost in my thoughts.
Knock knock knock
A sudden noise caught my attention, jolting me back to the present moment. I found myself sitting in my office, reality crashing back as I looked around the familiar surroundings.
"Chief?" from behind my closed door I recognized my assistant's high-pitched voice. "The kids are here. Should I tell one of them to come in?" Mayella's question came muffled through the door.
"Uh, yes please. Send one of them in,"
I let out a long rough exhale, straightening my back and preparing my desk clean. It's gonna be a long day today, alright.
My desk was cluttered with their profile portfolios, their information scattered haphazardly in messy piles. I couldn't help but smile as I looked at the disorganized mess. It was as if I was playing a game of chance, betting one profile after another. Though gambling wasn't something I personally enjoyed, not really my taste of hobby.
After a while of tidying up, the knocks came back outside my door.
I squared my shoulders, adjusted my jaw, and plastered a bright smile on my face. "Come in!"
My door handle began to twist slowly, and I bet inside my head who it would be. It creaked open, a male figure stepping forward with an anxious expression.
His face recognized mine as he shut the door behind him, though he was avoiding my gaze I greeted, "Good morning, Aiden. How are ya?" my tone all casual and upbeat.
He shyly sat down on the chair in front of me, looking down. "I'm good." he replied shortly.
I kept my eyes observing him, carefully noting every movement he made. "Good, good." I said calmly, my voice almost tired in the deafening room we sat together in.
It was a bit awkward, with him shifting nervously and facing slightly to the right. I leaned forward on my desk. "How about school? How's school going for ya, usually?"
He nodded as he replied, "It's pretty okay. I don't do that bad, I guess." I could tell he was trying to push his voice out more, in an attempt to hide the nervousness he was feeling.
"Yeah, okay." I tried to show my active interest by nodding encouragingly, despite the obvious fact he didn't wanna be here. Who would, anyways? Ha, kids.
He waited for an another question though I allowed the awkward silence to sink in. Leaning back against the chair again, I gestured towards him with the pen I was fidgeting with. "You know, my son goes to school too."
He finally met my gaze, a surprise look brightening up his face. "You have a son?" he asked curiously.
I smiled at him and nodded with my eyebrows raised. "Yep, same age as you." there was a hint of pride in my tone as I was thinking about my son.
