[ a surprise ]

Venus looked at the plastic stick that she had had Angel grab from the store on his way back to the hotel, since she would be arriving soon and needed to figure something out.

She'd been having aversions to foods that she had loved since her youth, and been more irritable over the smallest things. . . Having read up on the subject for several years, the possibility of becoming pregnant sat in the back of her mind for a while.

Her and Lucifer had even discussed the possibility for children further down the line — they had all of eternity to truly decide when and if they wanted to expand their family further.

So staring at the plastic stick with the digital screen that so clearly read 'pregnant', had a mix of emotions brewing within her stomach. . . Alongside the apparent baby.

Her and Lucifer had only been married for nearly two years, but together for about three years before their wedding. . . She recalled casting the contraceptive charm maybe half a dozen times since they got married. . . So in hindsight, it was shocking she hadn't gotten pregnant sooner.

"You okay in there?" Angel questioned through the door.

"I believe so. . ." She replied, unlocking the door and opening it to allow Angel Dust and, surprisingly, Charlie to enter. Venus handed the results to Angel first. "I mean, I want to believe I'm alright."

"Holy shit." He muttered, handing them over to Charlie.

Charlie's eyes went wide before a grin broke out on her face and she threw her arms around Venus. "This is amazing! Oh — you have to tell Dad and we have to get you to Asgard since the clinics in Hell don't know much about Asgardians yet!"

Charlie then gasped loudly, pulling away from the spontaneous hug. "Can I tell Peter?"

"Not yet." Venus replied quietly, taking the test back from Charlie. "Lucifer must know before anyone else. . . I should probably tell him now before I talk myself out of it." She chuckled.

"Is now a bad time to mention that he's on his way over now?" Angel questioned, gesturing towards the lobby just in time for the doors to open.

Venus's eyes widened before she shoved the test in her dress pocket, knocking the box off of the counter and into the trash can beside it.

She exited the bathroom just in time to greet her husband. "It's been three hours, I've missed you!" He declared, somehow managing to pick her up in the hug.

Venus squealed and then kissed him once he put her down.

"I have news." She blurted out.
He stared up at her with wide eyes. "What is it?" He asked.

She pulled the test out of her pocket and handed it to him. . . Immediately his eyes went wide and she could've swore they went wider upon seeing the results.

"Oh. Oooh — golly, uh, yeah! That's sure news. . . Wow." Lucifer looked up at his wife to find her gnawing on her bottom lip as she awaited his reaction after the initial shock. He forced her to stop by kissing her sweetly.

"I love you." He whispered, his hand subconsciously splaying across her flat abdomen, silently telling her everything she needed to know.

"And I love you." She responded.

A trip to Asgard was in order. Venus waited a week and a half after finding out to announce it to everyone else in her family, and she waited another week to finally make the trip to Asgard with just her and Lucifer, so as to not overwhelm the healers.

They had her lay in a bed similar to the one she had laid in when she was unconscious from being poisoned, while they prepped her to discover how far along she was and how the baby was doing.

The examination began and moments later, a single reaction pierced the room.

“Oh!” One of the healers said suddenly.

“What is it?” Venus questioned, cautiously watching the golden glow of the healer's hands on her abdomen.

“Best to show you, your majesty.”

The healer's golden colored magic showed itself within a live display of what was happening inside Venus's womb at that very moment. . . Two heartbeats filled their ears, the sound confusing them until two little forms showed up in the gold.

“Twins?” Venus breathed out questioningly, casting a quick glance at the couple of healers present as backup, before looking over to Lucifer who was staring at the display in shock.

“Yes.” The older of the three healers confirmed. “Twins are becoming a rarity within Asgardian women, considering the birth rates have gone down considerably over the last six hundred years.”

“Twins!?” Lucifer finally voiced, eyes wide with his hand pulling at the collar of his dress shirt.

“Luci, my love, you're panicking.” Venus said softly, grasping his free hand within hers. “Everything will be alright!” She declared.

“I know! — I just never considered the possibility of twins. . . One baby at a time, sure, but two? . .” He stressed.

He took a few deep breaths and kissed her forehead. “I love you. I love you so much. I'll do my absolute best. . . Anything the three of you need, you have it, no questions asked.”

“We can do this.” Venus declared, looking him in his eyes.

He nodded in agreement. They could do it.
