The days in the Cloud Recesses turned into weeks, and for Wei Wuxian, life was a series of ups and downs. While he continued to find the rigid rules of the Lan Clan stifling, he also discovered moments of joy and unexpected camaraderie. Lan Wangji, in particular, became an enigma that Wei Wuxian was determined to unravel. Their morning lessons in music, coupled with occasional debates over the sect's rules, began to weave an intricate, delicate bond between them. But as their tentative friendship blossomed, a new tension arose: their impending marriage.
Though Wei Wuxian was still only twelve years old, he could sense the weight of the discussions around him. Elders spoke in hushed tones; disciples whispered when he passed by. The marriage that had been decided for political alliance now seemed imminent, and Wei Wuxian's curiosity was piqued.
A Sudden Summons
One afternoon, as Wei Wuxian was attempting to sneak lotus seeds into his soup — much to the dismay of the kitchen staff — a messenger arrived from the Lan Clan’s main hall. The disciple bowed deeply. “Wei Wuxian, you have been summoned by Lan Xichen.”
Wei Wuxian blinked, his heart skipping a beat. “Lan Xichen-xiong? Now? Did I do something wrong again?”
The disciple shook his head, but his face remained serious. “I do not know the reason, but he asked for you immediately.”
Wei Wuxian quickly set down his bowl and hurried to the main hall, where he found Lan Xichen waiting with Lan Qiren. Lan Wangji was there as well, standing to the side, his face impassive but his eyes focused intently on Wei Wuxian.
Lan Xichen smiled gently as Wei Wuxian approached. “Wei-gongzi, thank you for coming so quickly,” he began. “There is something important we must discuss with you.”
Wei Wuxian nodded, trying to suppress his nervousness. “Of course, Lan Xichen-xiong. What is it?”
Lan Qiren, his expression stern as ever, spoke next. “Your marriage to Wangji has been decided by our elders and your sect leader. It is time for you to begin preparing for the ceremony.”
Wei Wuxian felt a flutter of nerves in his chest. Though he had known this was coming, hearing it spoken aloud made it feel real in a way it hadn’t before. “Preparing?” he asked, his voice sounding smaller than he intended.
Lan Xichen nodded. “Yes, Wei-gongzi. There are many rituals and customs to be observed, and we must ensure that you are ready to fulfill your role.”
Wei Wuxian glanced at Lan Wangji, who remained silent, his expression unreadable. Wei Wuxian’s mind raced. He was still just a child, and the idea of marriage — even if it was a political alliance — felt daunting and confusing. But he squared his shoulders and nodded. “Alright. I’ll do my best.”
The Marriage Preparations Begin
The preparations began the very next day. Wei Wuxian was taken under the wing of Madam Lan, a distant aunt of the Lan Clan, who was in charge of instructing him on the various rituals and customs of the wedding. Madam Lan was kind but firm, and she quickly discovered that teaching Wei Wuxian was no easy task.
"Now, Wei-gongzi," she began, "for the wedding ceremony, you must learn the proper way to bow three times — once to Heaven and Earth, once to the ancestors, and once to your spouse. It must be done with grace and respect."
Wei Wuxian nodded eagerly, trying to mimic her movements. But his enthusiasm soon got the better of him, and his bows turned into exaggerated flourishes, each one grander than the last. Madam Lan sighed, her patience wearing thin. “No, no, Wei-gongzi! You must be more serious. This is a solemn occasion.”
